Can you pass the 3rd grade?

A friend sent this to me today in an email.  I decided to put it in Grapevine so more people would see it than fun websites.  Let me preface this by saying, when I was around 6 or 7, my father taught me the capital of every state.  We had a gigantic map of the U.S. hanging on a wall and I was mesmerized by it.  Course that was a long time ago, but still, I fancy myself knowledgeable on where all the states are located.

That being said, this little quiz has taunted me all day long.  Beware, it is addictive.  I still haven't gotten them all in time.  I'm sure there are those of you out there like seaglass who won't have any trouble.  But the rest of you go and have fun!

I was at 28 when my time ran out, but then again I just woke up, so I'm moving a little slower than I might later in the day.  I'm sure I wouldn't get them all correct though.

Rhune, I've been trying off and on for 24 hours now and can't get them all.  It's those dadgum New England states I can't seem to get.  I wish seaglass would hurry up and get back from her trip so she can give me a geography lesson. I refuse to cheat and look at a map.  And would someone please tell me where the heck Wisconsin is?     Grin

Ok done it. It first I didn't realize it was a timed test so I was watching the noon news while casually placing the states in. I got 30/30 before time ran out. Then I saw I had a time limit so I turned off the tv and instead of placing the names from north to south and east to west taking time to locate the state names I found it was quicker to take the names in order and place them on the states.  I got 48/48 but it was tricky.  I am a map person, I read maps for sun plus I have visited all the states except for Hawaii so I should know where they are. I want a harder challenge placing state capitols on their correct state. I might not pass that one.

and Wisconsin.... up north, central, 2 great lakes wrap around it, find the mitten Michigan and go one state west...

what I found disappointing about this test was the first time I took it I didn't see that it was a timed test so didn't hurry along and ran out of time. Then I got the message I had failed 3rd grade. So I took it again this time mindful of the time element and got them all named under the time and it doesn't say "YOU PASSED!!" or anything at all. No diploma, no nothing! Just sends you back to the start to do it again and again...

I got them all right...just a little dissapointed they didn't tell me I won Wink

lakelady - Being a Wisconsin Badger myself, I use my own little trick that resembles the state of Wisconsin.  Hold up your left hand  with your palm facing away from you, with your thumb sticking out.  That is a rough sketch of Wisconsin, your thumb being Door County, the space between your thumb and your pointer finger, Green Bay, home of the Green Bay Packers, and the jutty knuckle part of your thumb where it connects to your hand being where I live.   Hope it helped.

What do you mean, 2 great lakes wrap around it?  Lake Michagan runs along the east side of the state (I happen to live right on the lake Smiley) while only a small, small part of Lake Superior touches the northern part of Wisconsin; although Lake Superior also wraps around Upper Michigan, which doesn't register on the game... Sad

Well on that map game it does show Wisconsin has 2 Great Lakes touching it and it is north central and it is west one state from Michigan and most everyone knows Michigan as shaped like a mitten. I have worked in schools with 3rd graders for many years and found teaching students about the states by giving each state a shape name and some interesting characteristic they could locate the states on most any map. Not all maps show as much detail as Rand McNally and most are more like the map in that game. And that game needs Alaska and Hawaii! Still a good teaching tool.
I remember finding a similar game identifying countries of the world. It might have been associated with National Geographic and you could select a continent and then had to point to the country when the name was show. I'll try to find that one again. I did terrible on that one but my friend from Sweden got most all right.

Here is the map game site from National Geographic.
 http://www.nationalgeographic.org/geospy/
There are several games here. The continents game is easiest, but finding the countries is pretty hard. You select a continent and then have a time limit to mark countries as they name them. I have visited many countries in Europe so figured I'd know them well... WRONG! I scored 16/37.  However it did mark a few wrong that were right, such as Portgual, if you don't line the cross hairs up directly over the center of the country it says wrong and then highlights the correct answer that is under your pointer! So I think I got 18 correct in the time limit.  And the USA states game does have Hawaii and Alaska but when it asked to find Hawaii and I clicked on Hawaii it said WRONG! LOL! Some bugs or you have to place your pointer in some exact spot to get it right. But still fun.

seaglass, just for you I took out my atlas (one of my fave books btw) and learned those NE states.  I always knew where you were.  The tip of the iceberg. haaaaa.   It's just those teeniny little states like Vermont and New Hampshire which I now know are next to you.  NY and Pennsylvania I now know are the "big" states.   Mass and Conn were tough.  The most difficult was Maryland, Del and NJ.   And for the record, I finally passed the test.  Though it only took about 4 days.  lol.
So now to try this new one.....
