Good Vibes for my Cat

My cat has apparently been bleeding internally for some time now. The vet still hasn't pinned down the cause, but until they can build her strength back up, she can't undergo the barium x-rays or exploratory surgery needed to find the problem. She had a blood transfusion from her sister last week and is doing somewhat better (she was so anemic before the transfusion that she started to collapse), but she still isn't eating much and needs to get stronger. The problem is likely either a gastric ulcer or some kind of obstruction.  Can you guys send out some good thoughts her way? She's our little good will ambassador at the bookstore. She's always greeted everyone at the door and makes all of our customers feel special with her affection. She's only 4 years old and I'm just not ready to lose my little work buddy.  Any prayers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Oh gosh!  These kinds of things about our pets just breaks my heart.  I'm not only going to pray for your work buddy, but that the vet figures this all out quickly.  Peace to you too, Marla

Thank you all so much.  Her name is Dido.  She's eating a little bit on her own, but mostly just chicken or tuna broth. But I'm hopeful since most of her basic functions are still intact. She goes in for a clotting test this morning. Blood, or at least cat blood, is supposed to clot within 8 minutes and last week hers was taking 15.
The only early sign that anything was wrong, and this has been going on for years, is that she was throwing up a lot. I'd always ask about it at check ups, but was told it was probably just a food allergy or hairballs etc...All of her blood tests have been and still are completely normal.  It wasn't until recently when we started seeing blood in the throw-up and she stopped eating that we realized it was far more serious. Whatever this is, has been frustratingly gradual and insidious.  As Pres. Bush would put it, we never had any actionable intelligence before now.  She is indeed a super sweetie and we all thank you for your prayers.  I'll keep you posted.

Hmm, now ringing a warning bell for me is the tuna.  My vet told me never give a cat tuna, especially males.  They LOOOOOOOOVE it, but it can cause bladder and kidney problems as they get older.  I would check with your vet and see what they say about the tuna - it's possible that's what's causing or agravating the problem.

Just curious here.  Does Dido actually live in the bookstore or does she go home with someone at the end of the day or weekend.

Do any of the people there give her "people" food?

Could it be she's a mouser and, are there mousetraps or chemicals around to kill mice?

Sorry for all the questions.  I'm praying that she feels a little better today and tomorrow and forever......

She stays at the store, although she's home with me at the moment. We don't have any insecticides or pesticides at the store. And the only thing that any customer has brought in is catnip, but that's been some time ago, and the cats really didn't seem to be interested in it. I asked about the tuna, and my vet said it wasn't a problem. She's only lapping a little juice diluted in water at any rate, so it shouldn't be harmful. And normally, the cats' diets have just been dry food. I talked to my roommate last night and he brought up something from his past that was disturbing. He had a dog at one time that developed an auto-immune disorder at the age of two. Basically the dog became allergic to it's own blood. Some of the symptoms are kind of similar, and the fact that her blood isn't clotting normally scares me. His dog died immediately after his blood transfusion though, so that gives me hope that this is something different.

So the update thus far: she went in for her check up yesterday morning. Everything went well. She ate a little more dry food and was acting perkier. But later that afternoon, her IV paw started swelling again and became somewhat purple. I took her to the emergency clinic (a nightmarish place), and the vet on duty said it was definately abnormal, but was hesitant to interfere with the ongoing undiagnosed situation (we couldn't get her regular vet on the phone).  She got a small steriod dose and came home with me for monitoring. So far the paw hasn't gotten any bigger, and she can still put weight on it.  With everything else going well, I just got panicked about possible complications. I'll take her back in on Monday.

Hmm, your cat's symptoms are ringing a bell now to me...it's not as common in cats, but has she been tested for parvovirus (parvo)?  Cats can get it and symptoms include bloody stool, and swelling in the extremities.

The paw hasn't gone down, but it's not getting any bigger. And she's EATING. Like she enjoys it again! She ate four times yesterday. I'm not sure if it was the steroid shot or just finding something she likes (science diet dry food that the vet gave me). She doesn't seem tired either. When I brought her back from the emergency clinic Saturday, I laid her on my bed and put some covers over her and she stayed in that position for hours, just exhausted. But yesterday and today, she's much perkier and interactive. Keep up the good work!
