Gastric Bypass, anyone?

I'm trying to learn more about this surgery from people who've actually had it.  There are variations on this surgery--stomach stapling and lap band, to name a few.

No personal questions or flames, please.  Just info.  Thanks!

I have heard a ton of successful stories from people who have had this

I think it is a personal decision and what which needs to be made after giving it a ton of thought.

I do know there are risks to having the surgery and that it is not as easy a time as alot of people assume it is.  I also know that it can really change ones life.

Good luck to you, or to whoever you know who is considering this surgery.

Flaming - on a serious subject like this?  No one here would dare.....  A few years back, I lost over 100 lbs. but I did it on my own -I think this surgery you're asking about is for weight loss.  (Please correct me if I'm incorrect.)

Well, I don't know anyone personally who's had this surgery but have heard plenty about it over the years.  Most wish they had had it sooner; very few (that I remember) would rue the results.

The easiest thing I can think of for a person to do, is speak to their physician and ask for permission to speak to about 5 of the doc's patients for their opinions.

I found this to be rather interesting - very down to earth - http://www.bypassbible.com/

Then there's Google:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=Gastric+Bypass+surgery+symptoms&ie=UTF -8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

I hope we can be of some help!

I have heard both good and bad things about this surgery.  I know you can lose a lot of weight doing this, and it's starting to become more common for people who have serious health issues to be concerned about weight with like diabetes, but that you have to be really prepared for the way your life will completely change.  You will no longer be able to eat many foods, because you must chew every bite of food to purified before you swallow or you likely will throw it back up.  I know I read a quote from Randy Jackson on American Idol and he talked about how he had to give up steak because he would spend the whole day chewing.  A friend of my mother's who had this surgery done had to be rushed to the hospital to have her stomach vacuumed after having this surgery because she had taken a calcium supplement pill and eaten french onion soup and one of the onions somehow wrapped around the pill, causing it to not dissolve and so it lodged in the little hole they make to connect to the intestines.  After she had her stomach vacuumed, the dr commented that he was suprised that this was the only time she'd had to have it done in the 6 weeks since she got her surgery and basically told her that was a common problem and they see a lot of people in to have their stomachs vacummed.  Now if you are at a health risk cause of weight I can really see the argument for this surgery, but if you're looking to just lose weight, it's a bad choice because it's not reversable and it's absolutely life altering in a big way.   Now one surgery I looked into was "gastric banding" which is the least intrusive or long term of all the proceedures out there.  It has the least side effects and risks as well.  It's akin to stomach stapling except there's no puncturing of the stomach.  They are these air filled bands they put around your stomach and then blow up to varying degrees to make the overall size of the stomach smaller and achieve the same effect as stapling would.  They can be removed at any time or have more air added or removed if necessary.  Course when I asked my dr about them, she rolled her eyes and told me to exercise more.   Grin

what does this does?.. the intestines are shortened? am i right?... whew.. that woud be really be hard... afterwards... because if religious diet and exercise is hard to do.. chewing a lot must be hard as well....hmmm...

well.. maybe i'll go with rhune's doc... exercise more.. cause if you want you lose weight.. all it takes is discipline.. in your eating habits, in exercise habits, etc..... Grin   (ok.. pau say that to yourself.. hehehe..)

Rupertydupe, I have a childhood friend; she's been overweight her whole life.  About 6 months ago, she had this surgery performed.  She's lost an amazing amount of weight, and is looking great.  I ran into her at MacDonald's recently.  She had ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, and was eating just the meat; however she had drank a glass of water when she got to the McD's, and had to wait 20 minutes before she could eat.  I was amazed to find out that you cannot eat and drink together.  I think it would require immense sacrifices to successfully live this way.

The only way that I would ever think about making this kind of life change, would be for every other option to have failed.  In my friends situation, I think this was so.  I do not remember her ever being thin.  It really was her last hope.

I like the band thing that Rhune has mentioned.  The unpermanence of it sounds much better.

Paulo, there are many people who have tried everything and have not been successful.  Sometimes there are other factors involved:  genetics, emotional issues, depression, food addiction, etc.  that seem to cancel the discipline you mention.

I am able, for example, to discipline myself very well in shopping whereas there are people out there who have serious spending problems.  I have also disciplined myself not to drink alcoholic beverages and there are people who cannot put a bottle down, no matter how hard they try.

My point is, we all have weaknesses and we all have strengths.  I hope that you are a person who is well-disciplined in the area of diet and exercise so that you will never have problems in this area.

The percentage of genetic obesity is so small, it can hardly be considered a factor.

My weight had gone uuuuup and downnnnn so many times.  It was because of the issues I bolded above.  When I was in my late thirties (or so), I became addicted to buttermild - believe it or not.  I could drink a gallon of that stuff per day.  I'm a chocoholic and would often devour the huge family-sized Hersey bar or a whole bags of Hersey's Kisses.  My obesity existed because of what I ate.  Period.

In 1989, I had lost a considerable amount of weight.  With that, came what I call an "apron".  It's a huge flap of loose skin that hung down from my abdomen.  I had to have surgery (for something else) so I spoke with my husband about having a plastic surgeon remove my apron.  I did and it was wonderful.

If anyone has watched Extreme Makeover, you'll know what a wonderful experience it can be.  The surgery and recovery is sheer hell but the outcome.....ahhhhhh - wonderful.

Congratulations on your victories, Mz!  Smiley

I wouldn't, however, discount genetics so much.  As yet, there is ongoing research in this area.  My main point was that for many people, discipline is nearly impossible in this area of life.

well.. if you have the will power.. you can do anything... it's all in the mind... yep.. i'm not good in any discipline as well.. coz its human to say just one more or just a little to feed my wants.. which depetes my goal...

what i'm saying is that if you think you are weak to discipline yourself or to do something meaning going through shortcuts rather than doing them the hard way.. then it would be costly for you.. but doing it the hard way is more fulfilling... Grin

as they say.. 'Life has no shortcuts'... at least in physical appearance.. the doctors can do the short cuts for you.. through such operations... Grin

i myself is genetically obese.. if you can see my clan of overweights.. but i keep on trying to diet and exercise to keep me fit.. rather to  make me fit.. hehehe  Grin I always dreamed of having a six pack on my abs rather than this flubby ones...

ok, I have avoided saying much in this thread, and have been contemplating talking about this here for quite some time now, so here we go.................

for those of you who have been here for a few months at least, if you remember a while back I had a little health scare where they thought I had cancer, but it ended up I have another disease (sarcoidosis) which is not as serious.  The reason the doctors founds that there was any reason to be concerned in the first palce was because I was having a bunch of tests done for an upcoming surgery.

well you may have guessed it by now, that upcoming surgery was gastric bypass.

I had the surgery on December 2nd of this past year.  I had no major health risks, was not diabetic and my blood pressure was actually very good, my cholesteral has always been good.  I was just unable to loose the weight, and trust me I tried a ton of different diets.  I always had the thought of doing an exercise plan, but once you get to a certain point as far as being out of shape, it is very hard both physically and mentally to do so.  Obesity also runs in my family, both sides of it, course you'd never know it looking at my sister though, she is a rail, lol.

Long story short, I had the surgery on December second and to date have over 60 lbs.

rupertydupe, or anyone else for that matter, I will gladly answer any questions you might have.  while this certainly is not a decision to be made lightly (so to speak) it has been a great decision for me personally.

thanks
