So I work at a highschool and noticed today that most kids have way nicer,newer cars than I!?Since when could highschool kids afford a car payment...whats up with that?

In a couple of months/years, when their leases comes to th end, they will end up with no car, and no money back. All these monthly payments for nuttin. Then, they will learn from that, and they will buy a used car. Roll Eyes

If you actually own your car, you have a heads up on them.... What these 16 year olds (and maybe their folks) don't realize is that new cars can get totaled as quick as POS cars...

on the flip side... perhaps they get a nice car in hopes of it lasting through college...

I had to buy my first vehicle (used) and pay my own insurance.... resented it at the time, but it taught me alot about money management and taking care of my stuff..... thanks mom and dad... love you

I also wonder how their part time jobs affect their school performance.

Finally I think walking is much much healthier.

When our son wanted a car, we bought him a 1952 Chevy, he loved it! The kids named it Bett Blue, for we had new seat covers and a new paint job put on it and that was under $500, I think the car cost $250, and he loved that car and took very good care of it. That was in the late 1970's.
We've noticed when parents buy their kids new cars, they are wrecked within a year. At least that was the case when our kids were in highschool.

A new license? Get them an old car and see how they take care of it first. Don't buy them a new car first! This is just my advise to all parents with teenagers.

As teens here in my place too, its their parents who bought it for them, or its a family car that they drive around, mostly for popularity reasons or to get the girls... I mean, Cebu is quite a small place, you can go to most places - the city, the beach or the mountains in around an hour... much like Hawaii... though the good scenic spots takes longer...

For my case, my parents payed the downpayment for my car(150,000 pesos) then i started my own business and I pay the rest(13,000 pesos each month) for 4 years.

I didn't care. I worked at Six Flags, saved my money and bought my car. I paid my gas and insurance too. All the people I knew who had things handed to them never learned to appreciate money.

My next car was a 1978 Camaro. Paid in Full from my own savings. Now I had the nice car. Tongue

well.. I think buying your teens a new car for a start isn't wise.. they should start with something second hand or not top of the line.. if they are able to take care of something not as likeable, what more for a newer car...

since i'm no longer the only Filipino here.. i'd speak more for the Manila region.... Cebu is a city in the south... anyways, i here, teenagers usually get their cars during their college years or when they reach 18 (you should be 18 before you get the license)... and majority I think get their cars from their parents, handed over or a second hand car... very few priveleged ones get the new top of the line cars.. and most evident in the University Belt (an area of Manila were most universities and colleges are situated)...

but I myself passed college to present without a car.. I prefer to commute by jeepney, bus, or train... I think buying land and house first is more practical than buying a car first... land appreciates while vehicles depreciate and they are luxuries that add in your expenses... Grin

I'm a 17 year old high school senior. I drive a '99 Cavalier and it's in pretty good condtion, except for a minor dent from when I rear-ended somebody with a trailer hitch. It actually belongs to my parents who make the car payments and pay the insurance, but I pay for gas.

It's the same with my friends. We all drive family cars with the exception of one who bought a used car from his parents for $2000.

None of my friends got new cars when they started to drive. We all drove family cars or used cars....kids need to appreciate the value of the vehicle before they get a new one, and then they should pay for it themselves to learn about credit and financing and such...
