Tabby's Filet

Okay so I want to spoil my cat to some degree.  She won't eat wet food unless it is one bite once the can has opened.   She won't eat tuna, chicken, beef or ham in any form.   Recently, I was told by a neighbor that she LOVES fish.   So I just went to the market and am cooking her a nice piece of fish to nibble on.   I am waiting impatiently now to see how she reacts.     Grin

i used to work at a mom and pop grocery store.  People would come in and buy cuts of steak, chicken, and cheeses and feed it to their pets on a weekly basis.  You are definitely not alone in your practice

For years we had cats as house pets. Usually they got some form of dry food as I could pour a big bowl and they would eat when hungry. We could go away for a few days and leave food and water and everyone was happy. Then with my last cat she had an eating disorder. She was a shelter cat and had many days of starvation before she was brought in. We could not put food down for her to eat as needed because she was always thinking she might not get fed again for a while and would eat everything in sight. She could break in to the cupboard at night and eat her way through a big bag of dry food.  We would find her asleep in the bag in the morning. She managed to open Tupperware to get at food and finally I had to keep it in a tin high up in a cupboard. I thought I'd start her on canned food when she got older as she couldn't break into those and would get the proper serving size and nutrition.  I bought the cheap stuff, the expensive designer stuff and always a new flavor and texture each week. However the vet told me cats don't like variety! They like consistancy, they want the same flavor and texture every meal. They like to know in advance what they will be getting. Cats are not humans and have very specific nutrition needs that prepared pet food has. I was told that dry food was best as it would not spoil and was also good for keeping tarter off teeth. As the cat gets older and teeth get old and worn you can switch to canned food. Just make sure to always have fresh water when feeding dry foods as well as wet foods. I'm sure Tabby loved her home cooked fish but make that an occasional treat and go back to one flavor of dry or canned nutritionally dense cat food for every day. You can treat her to more play time, a new toy, brush her fur, and a nice snuggle and roughhousing.
Think of your cat as a child. Kids love candy as an occasional treat and would eat candy every meal if they could but nutritionally it is not a good idea!

I'm wondering what she thought of her fillet....

Did you cook it, or feed it to her raw?

Fish fillets are my main meat these days, I guess Tabby and I have something in common Grin

seaglass, I totally understand.  I now know she is all about her Meow Mix.  She loves fresh Meow Mix more than anything. I put it into a pourable Tupperwear container to keep it fresh.  She was not wild about the fish.  Course it wasn't mahi mahi or salmon and it wasn't grilled.    Roll Eyes

Luci,  we recently adopted our kitty through the Siamese Rescue.  They pick up any abandoned or unwanted siamese/ragdoll/orientals/etc. from the shelters and then they move them to their own no-kill facility or they foster them in the homes of volunteers.  Most of them are not kittens, but many are young or even a little older. If you are looking for a mellow lap cat type it's an ideal route to go.  They have a 10 day trial period and if the kitty you picked just doesn't work out you can either get your money back or try a different kitty.  The first one we picked didn't quite work out cause he liked to nip and it scared my son, so we swapped out for a sweet little manx and it's just been great ever since.  I noticed they have a branch in Texas and a web page at:

http://tx.siameserescue.org/

You can browse available kitties there, although I found the kansas one was not entirely up to date.  I ended up using the web page to find out what pet store they were showing the cats at and went in to look in person. They visit different stores around the area here each week.

For me it was a better choice than getting a kitten from a breeder that might have heartbreaking health problems or ruin my things, plus I feel good about rescuing a kitty.  It was kinda nice to have one place where all the siamese were at and their personalities and potential health problems already known to choose from.
