How Musical Are We?

Do you play a musical instrument?  Sing? Dance?

I'm still rather new here, so I don't know if this has come up in the past but it might be interesting to find out who here has musical talent.

As for me, I actually majored in music in college.  I play clarient, some piano and guitar, a little flute and sax, and I love to sing.

Rup, I don't have a musical talent bone in my body.  When I sing, imagine Cameron Diaz singing karaoke in My Best Friend's Wedding.    Grin

When I was a teenager, I tried to learn to play the guitar and took some lessons.  I was pitiful.  I finally decided that all I wanted to learn at that point was how to play Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.  So my teacher taught me that I and quit.   I still have the guitar.

eta I am a great dancer though.  My friend QuantumT and I tore up the dance floor at a little music hall in New Orleans last year.  All black band playing funk and dance music.  That was a blast.

hey I just know we can get a band or orchestra together with some singers too.

I play piano, some flute and a wee bit of the Cello.  My daughter is taking cello lessons.  My husband also is a budding cellist and has an incredible singing voice.

Man Rupe...if you only knew how "on topic" this subject is for me today!!!   Cool  Cool  Cool
I am a percussionist.  I also play drum set.  Semi-pro level.  I play in an orchestra and 2 bands (1 contemporary Christian and 1 Rock).  I have played in the past, piano, trombone, baritone and bass guitar.....but I'm a drummer at heart.

My favorite genre to play is fusion jazz and progressive rock.  Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater is my "drum god"......

GREAT THREAD RUPE!!!!  WhooHoo!!!!   Cool   Cool   Cool  Cool  Cool  Cool Grin

I thought that myself, Rhune, when I started playing again after a long hiatus...but it's like riding a bike....and came back to me very quickly and i'm sure it would for you as well!!!  I'm sight reading quite easily now and increasing the level of difficulty of the pieces I'm attempting far above what I could do when I was younger.

And besides....music stimulates the brain and is believed to ward off the effects of alzheimer's and other mental faculty disorders...!!!!

I sing and really dance!  The voice is getting lower as I mature Grin
My husband also sings and dances as well.  So, we love to dance together!
In our game room is a trombone, harmonica, guitar, ukelele, keyboard, violin, plus two karakoke machines.  He plays all of them some, others very well.  I play the tamborine, even thought I had years of piano lessons!  Maybe I'll take it up again, if I can stay away from this forum Roll Eyes  hahahaha Grin

BK, I have a question and I mean no offense by it:  Did I understand correctly that you are not a Christian...but you play in a contemporary Christian band?  If I've misunderstood, please correct me.

I LOVE contemporary Christian music.  That's all we listen to and we do a lot of it in our church as well.  My spouse can tear up a piano--and I mean that in a GOOD way!  Grin

Yeah, confusing huh?  Huh  I can't say I'm NOT a Christian because I was "saved" years ago...and held church office in a couple of Baptist churces.....but through my continued theological studies I have backed off the rigid belief that there is only 1 way to know God.

I still love the music, I believe in God and try to use all the talents he has bestowed upon me....one of which is music....so I try to use at least a portion of my talent in God's work....in addition to the secular music which I also play with gusto!!!!

No offense at all Rupe....actually, I think you and I could be friends in the "real" world judging by your posts..... Grin

Thanks.  Wink  You've already stuck by me in a couple of other posts (you know where I'm talking about) and I appreciated that support.

I can play the radio and whistle a bit and that is the extent of my musical ability. Can't carry a tune in a basket, can't dance but I enjoy listening to music, does that count? My husband's family are all musicians. His dad has played with local community bands for years, as he is now 87 and just stopped playing last year. My husband was in bands and is very musical. He plays clarinet, and sax and guitar, and piano and banjo. He planned to be a music teacher but was steered toward technology teacher in high school. Father in law plays organ, piano, clarinet, flute and sax. My oldest son plays guitar and trombone and sings in choral groups.

Seaglass, like your husband, I was planning on becoming a music teacher--a high school band director, in fact.  After seeing too many band directors' marriages fall apart because of the enormous stress of working extended hours for competitions and so on, I decided this was not the life for me.

I think we all have innate musical talent.  It just depends on whether it was nurtured and brought out at a young age.  I think your appreciation of music and your enjoyment of whistling can attest to my theory.  Wink
