Interceptor or Heartgard Plus

Those of you who give a monthly heartworm preventative to your cat or dog know what I'm talking about.

I've been buying Interceptor from an Australian web site for quite some time, now.  Well, due to restrictions from the company that manufactures Interceptor, Australia can no longer ship this product to the U.S.  Whereas we pay around $40 here for it, it is only about $17 from Australia.  So, now I'm looking at Heartgard Plus.  So far, I've only found one Australian web site that will ship it here.  The others will not.

Pet owners, what are you paying for heartworm meds and does anyone get theirs shipped in from overseas?  I'd especially like to know from Canadian pet owners how much these meds are there.

Rupe, this is unknown territory for me.  I simply take Tabby to the vet once a year and that does the trick.  The rest of the time I just give her flea meds every few months and pull the ticks off of her.  I am more worried about her roaming in the woods and getting bitten by a rattlesnake than I am about anything else.

wow..it never occured to me to buy from Australia before. I guess when it comes to my furkids, I don't take a lot of chances with stuff like this just cause of cost...mine have always had the best. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to them cause I tried to save a few bucks.

However, when I do try to save, I usually go to:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/

They are awesome and I have even gotten the distemper shots from them and given them to Shadow myself. It is a pain though and easier to just let the vet do it cause Shadow is a big baby and needs to be held tight when having shots.

Anyway..Azure asked me to stop by and offer my advice. I am not a vet but I stay very on top of things and have self taught myself for the sake of my cats and  dog and for many others that I have helped. If it was me, the price difference once a year would not be worth taking the chance of getting from out of the country. But that is me. I have never thought about buying from Canada for my pets. I'm unsure if pet meds would be cheaper but I guess it would be worth a shot if you really need to save the money.

Good Luck!

Yes, I do need to save the money!  I take great care to give my greyhound a monthly heartworm preventative in pill form called Interceptor.  It can be purchased in three and six month quantities.  Several other owners of retired greyhounds also get their Interceptor from Australia.  These people love their dogs as much as I love mine.

That came across as condescending.  Maybe you didn't mean for it to be.  I absolutely love my dog--a rescue, by the way--and I take great care of him, almost to an obession.

Interceptor, in my opinion, is the best for my dog. The Interceptor that I have ordered in the past from Australia is made by the same pharmaceutical company (Novartis) as the stateside Interceptor.  The ingredients and dosages are the exact same.

I don't have a problem using meds from another country.  I've lived overseas for seven years.  I've been vaccinated, medicated, and hospitalized with "foreign" medications made by international pharmaceutical companies.  So have my children, one of whom was born overseas.

There is nothing wrong with shopping around for the best price on a good, tried and true medication instead of forking out the marked up price the vet's office wants for it.  My vet is aware that I have brought from Australia and is OK with it.  He's even written the prescription for me to order it online.  I feel 100% OK with doing this and am surprised that this is even brought into question here.

Sorry I even brought this up here.  There are greyhound boards where I can discuss this.

I didn't mean to offend you. I apologize that I did. The above post was my own experience.

The fact that you have rescued a greyhound proves that you are a wonderfully good hearted person. I have an animal activist friend who rescued one many years ago. Eddy is getting old now but he is a wonderful baby big who hates not to be the main point of attention. The biggest problem that my friend has with hers is that his teeth have to be cleaned every 6 months. Wow..talk about an expense....

anyway..again my apologizes that my post didn't sound right. I hope you are able to find another way to obtain this cheaply for your furkid.

I'm still working on it.

I wouldn't say that I'm a wonderfully kindhearted person but I will say that having a rescued greyhound in my life is one of the most wonderful things that has ever happened to me.  I could write pages and pages about him.  Retired racers make excellent house pets because they are docile and...basically...lazy!  LOL!

I am not an animal activist in the PETA sense but I am pro animal rights and am a vegetarian.  My kids and I love animals and would do anything to help one in need.  I have a great neighbor who is the same way, so we get along very well.

Anyway, I'm sorry to have made a stink about your post, Dar.  I'm afraid that the cost I'm going to incur stateside with the heartworm meds is going to be significant and we are a one-income family.  I have to save where I can without sacrificing the quality of care for my family.

About your friend's greyhound's teeth...ugh.  How well I know that plight.  My vet says he's never seen a breed with worse teeth.  I blame the racetrack and the diet they put the dogs on there.  My dog gets a dental done once a year.  Between visits, I take a Crest spinbrush and clean his teeth every few days.

Rupe, as the owner of 6 greatdanes, I have used both of these.  Around here, they both cost about the same.  As you know, heartworm preventative cost more for large breeds(yikes!).  Our dogs prefer the taste of Heartgard, that's what they get.  If the preventatives you get from australia are the same formula, but cheaper; I'd buy them too.  Good luck on finding them elsewhere!

As for your question, I worked for a vet. for sometime, and we sold both brands.  I really think it's a personal preference, both are good preventatives.  Just my two cents worth.
