DSL vs. Cable
« on: May 20th, 2004, 2:18pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Our current Internet service is DSL.  Recently, I've been unhappy with it.  I'm thinking of switching to cable because our cable company is running a special right now.  I would end up saving $4 a month plus I'd have a faster connection.

Has anyone here made the switch?  What do you think?

I had cable and it was GRAT fastest thing I ever had but sadly they didnt seem to know how to run it and I was on phone with Tech support daily and had down time as long as days in some cases. When it ran I loved it if your cable compnay knows what they are doing its the best thing ever far as I am concerned. I switched to DSL because of all the problems and I think its MUCH slower! Watch the price break your getting it probably only for a a month or so then it goes to regular price and you might wind up paying much more! That was anothe reason we moved to DSL it was alot cheaper! If you dont mind the higher price go with Cable otherwise stay with what you got. But to answr your question Cable is far better (when it works) lol

I think it has a lot to do with who is providing the service. I have DSL at work and we have had absolutely no problems with it. I have cable at home with comcast and again..little to no problems. I don't think there is a huge difference in price but if you can save a bit of money with one over the other..go for it cause they are both expensive. Once I got cable though..there was just no way I was going back to dial up.

Good Luck..and if you are going to change..try to convince them to install for free if you will switch..sometimes they will do that. Also..if you know of anyone else who is thinking about switching..sometimes they will give you a free month if that person tells them you recommended them.

Within the last month we moved from dial up with 2 phone lines to DSL to save money. We don't have cable tv, so cable internet would be very costly. DSL was the cheapest method we could get to be online. One phone line for both services, and my DSL only costs $20/mo, the same as my dial up service cost before. We closed out the second phone line. DSL is fast enough for me, I'm in no hurry and sure seems faster than dial up! Friends who have cable internet here have nothing but trouble as branches fall on the lines quite often knocking out cable service for all types.

I have DSL and love it

Cable is available where I live, but it is only one way.  So one way makes it slower than DSL is, if it were offered two way here, I would get it, providing it is not too much higher in price

My DSL is definitely better than dial-up ever was.

Dar, we have comcast here, too.  The price of installation and the first two months' discount are substantially lower than the $50 we currently spend per month for DSL.  Even after the cable rates go back up, my monthly internet service will still be $4 less.

Am I correct in assuming that the internet only goes down when the cable TV does?  If that's the case, we almost never have cable down time around here.

Partially true our internet (Adelphia) was down almost every month for as little as a few hours to days! and in almost every case TV still worked! they has server issues and (I feel) their inexperience with internet showed. I would snatch cable back up in a heartbeat if price was as low as my DSL ($34.95) price of cable internet from my cable service is over $50.00 so the saving is BIG!

actually I have had the best luck with Comcast..I guess that is why they are so big. I don't think my tv has ever been down other than during bad storms. If my internet has been down more than twice in a year I'd be shocked. They are a good Choice ..I say go for it!

I switced from dial up to comcast cable also and I love it. it is expencive,23.00 for dial up vs 49.99 for comcast but i just look at it like 7 or 8 per week more than i was paying. i could save that by saying no to some nonsence item once a week in the store. Grin Grin  kabi

We switched to cable last week ! Cool

We were first on dial up (56k)..ugh, then I moved and was oncable ! Weeeeeeeeeeeeee
And then I moved back, and had to connect with phone company. I didnt mind the speed of the DSL untill recently. Many problems occured in a short period of time, and everytime I called the tech support, they always started by trying to blame me for the problem.  Angry
So, I called cable company, and checked for speed and price and everything.
Saving ? LOL No jokes, cable is $0.02 / months cheaper than DSL for me now. Its faster though. 1.5 times faster than DSL.
So fast that I realize now that my computer is old (3 years).Sad

Sheisback, my computer is also old--four or five years old.  My DSL technical support has always been great and friendly, but they also would have me believe that a lot of the problems are on my computer when I know that they aren't.  My problems with DSL happened after our entire town lost DSL service for a period of about a week.  Since then, it still hasn't been right.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!  On Monday, I'm calling Comcast and setting up an appointment for cable internet!  Cool

I went from dial up to cable, and I love it!!!! Cool Cool

We use Prolog for an additional charge of 34.95 and have had no problems.  My total bill for cable w/ HBO & Cinemax plus internet is around 99.00 per month.  If it is offered in your area, I highly recommend it.

Cool   Cool   Cool   Cool  I'm writing my first post here as a brand new cable internet user!

I'm very pleased with the speed.  For some reason, this board was particularly slow on my computer with DSL.  Well, not anymore.  Grin
