Dog Owners...help!?

My normally wonderful hound has decided that this is the summer to start digging up my garden...he is 7, this is the first time he has done this since he was a puppy, and was trained out of it...I really dont think he is bored- he has plenty of playtime and lots of long runs. It is driving me crazy...suggestions?

Mine's not a digger but his girlfriend is.  I wish I had a helpful suggestion for you.  I know that people with "diggers" get so frustrated.

I wanted to add: is your dog digging a hole and then lying down in it?  If so, he might be doing this to cool off.  Maybe a cheap kiddle pool filled with water would meet his need to cool off so he wouldn't dig?  Huh

Shadow is not an outside dog so she doesn't dig but her mom was an in/out dog that was never hooked in her life and she would dig holes under mom's bushes to keep cool. We had her for 7 years before she was hit by a car and there was no breaking her of it. The only time that I ever hooked Shadow out, she would dig holes due to boredom. Have you tried giving your furkid rawhides and such to keep it from being bored? Do you have a dog kennel outside or a dog leash run or what? Is there a different place you could move the dog to that wouldn't matter if it dug?

I wish I had more advice but Rupertydupe is right..this is a subject that frustrates many and I have never heard of a fool proof way to stop them..

Hmm, I am not a dog owner, but looking at this from another perspective as a cat owner...when my cat was younger and wanted to sharpen her claws on my couch, I would firmly tell her "no" and move her to the cat scratching post and then praise her heavily for using it.  She no longer touches the couch...could this be modified for your dog?  Could you provide a designated digging area and encourage your dog to dig there?  Praise can be a good motivator for animals sometimes when the scolding isn't getting the message across.

You know, Rhune, a sandbox came to mind when I read Kelby's original post here.  I don't know if the dog would find that a suitable replacement or would poop there and go dig up the rose bushes!  Roll Eyes  Poor Kelby.  Embarassed

Could you provide a suitable place for alternate digging that is soft dirt like the garden and then spray the doggie-be-gone junk around the garden?

Got a brand new cocker spaniel puppy, 4 months old, on arrival in Maine last week.    Hoping the word "no" said firmly, will eventially stop his digging holes in our drive,  flower and veggie gardens.
His fluffy white paws are now brown!

I have to wonder if your dog is a labrador.  They will dig to China if there's a patch of dirt, just for the enjoyment of digging.  LOL, I am going to run outside and snap a pict of my house, to show you how I control the 6 great danes from digging in my flowerbeds......well shoot, Photobucket won't let me load it Huh

Anyway!....we have a picket fence around the yard to keep the dogs outside. Grin  I imagine this is inconceivable if you live in a city or town.

I think I read somewhere before if you put down chunky pine nugget type mulch they dont like laying in it. I'm not positive though. kabi

P.S. I posted the question on my forum too. who know maybe I get a suggestion for you.
