Steroid Injections?
« on: Jun 28th, 2004, 12:45pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Have any of you ever had a steroid injection in the joint, of a hip, knee, etc.?

If so, tell me the good about it.  Did it stop the pain?  Is it worth the effort?

I'm told a numbing substance goes in first, then the steroid.  This sounds to me as if it would be horrible!

Ok, tell me the good reasons to do this, rather than to have constant pain a a hip?

I need support, for the thought of it makes me cringe.

Luci,
I had a steriod injection in my shoulder. It hurt like the dickens but then my shoulder was pain free for about six weeks. Unfortunately I required surgery so I did not get anymore injections. I do know that there are concerns regarding long term usage so you might want to research it a bit if this is going to be more than a one time thing.

It did stop my pain but as far as it being worth it, I coulndn't say.

Steroid injections are commonly used in professional sports to mask an injury so that an athlete can perform to his full potential.

The original use of the steroid is to promote rapid healing due to the tissue forming characteristics of the steroid.

In normal instances like your's luci, it would seem that the steriod is being prescribed to reduce pain/inflamation?  If so....this would be to allow normative functioning of the affected joint...BUT...it may allow an injury to become worse (tear, degeneration, etc) leading to invasive corrective surgery later.....sooo....

It DOES work (I've had both shoulders shot when bodybuilding....dumb ass move by the way....) and the results can be amazing elimination of chronic pain....but...realize going in that you are probably just postponing dealing with this injury until later...

This is not a professional medical opinion....

It is the hip joint, and the pain keeps me from doing things I like, like walking Roll Eyes

I know it is used on athletes, but what I want to know and probably o one can tell me for sure is how long it will last.  If the guarantee is only 6 weeks, why bother?  An injection all the way to the hip joint, OMG! :yikes: :faint:
Tomorrow is the xray, that is if I don't chicken out, been supposed to do this for a month.  I know, I know, some of you will say it doesn't hurt bad enough if I haven't gone already, but it does!

FluidJoint
New FLUIDjoint® has substantially greater effect over Glucosamine for improving overall joint function.
Pharmacists around the country are bracing for the rush of people expecting to get one of the newest breakthroughs in medical science called FLUIDjoint®.

What calcium is to your bones FLUIDjoint® is to your joints.

It's being compared to "human joint oil" for adults because of it's ability to deliver powerful micronutrients to the human joints.

Just imagine a formula that will help your body to reduce joint discomfort, stiffness and improve flexibility to enhance daily living activities.

Scientists have identified and condensed the micronutrients that your body can use and put to work within days.

With the special micronutrients in FLUIDjoint® the only "effects" experienced are more mobility, comfort and improved joint health.

This brand-new supplement is a huge breakthrough for those concerned about joint function, because the clinical results show that the remarkable health benefits are substantial.

"FLUIDjoint® goes directly to the cartilage and helps joints move with ease, helping to preserve cartilage and improve joint function,"

"FLUIDjoint® combines micronutrients that work with our own bodies immune system to help reduce joint dysfunction."

"The major problem is that our immune function declines as we age. FLUIDjoint® provides the valuable micronutrient support needed to help protect our joints,"

Each chewable dose of FLUIDjoint® is so good it tastes just like a tablespoon of a vanilla milkshake. That makes most people happy because they can get rid of all those huge supplement pills they choke down everyday.

"FLUIDjoint®'s effect was far superior than Glucosamine in every clinically measured joint parameter. A remarkable 90% of the people who use FLUIDjoint® can expect to experience an improvement in joint function. FLUIDjoint® is safe and effective for continuous, long term use, according to study results."

For most, FLUIDjoint® provides rapid results. A noticeable improvement in joint performance can be seen in less than 14 days of taking the daily dosage.

Each place in your body where bone meets bone is a potential spot for the grinding agony of joint pain, arthritis, stiff fingers or sore knees.

Until now, many people have flocked to remedies that contain Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM or Collagen.

Yet, Glucosamine and Chondroitin have a common drawback, they do not work for everyone.

In contrast, FLUIDjoint® is a new micronutrient supplement. Drugstores will be able to provide FLUIDjoint® without a prescription.

"This all results in the most advanced joint health supplement on the market today. It lets you move with ease. It works sooner than imagined. Your joints can bend and flex easier so you can do all the things you love to do."

Clincal Statements
When activity stresses a joint, the body reacts by sending neutrophils (white blood cells) to the site of your joint, or other inflamed areas of your body. As these neutrophils accumulate they degrade and start releasing caustic enzymes that cause joint discomfort. FLUIDjoint™ works by helping to restore the protective barrier surrounding your joints and supporting the body’s natural defense against inflammation. This natural support helps joints feel better, move more freely and improves overall joint health.*

*****This was on the evening news.  I think I'll try it before having any injections.

It's a good plan to check with your Dr and see what he says about it.  Metabolife is an OTC "medicine" that had a fantastic pitch speech too, and one of the key ingredients was killing some people and causing severe personality changes in others.  Just because it's all natural or over the counter does not make it safe.  Talk to your doctor about the ingredients and possible side effects.

I've had a knee replacement, and the other knee injected with Synvisc.  I wasn't too excited about having the second surgery, since it took so long for my system to get over the first one.  Synvisc did help, and the shots didn't hurt much, but lately, the knee has become more painful once again.   I would be willing to try FLUIDjoint, if my doctor argrees.    I've been taking the Glucosamine/chondroitin comb. for years, and it helped up to a point.  I need to have a shoulder repaired before anything.   I'm going in for an MRI to determine the extent of the damage to the joint, then we'll talk about alternatives.  It's been injected with cortisone a couple of times.  It wasn't bad the first time, the second hurt a bit.  The hip is something else again, but your doctor should be able allay your fears.   Everyone's experience will be different.  I hope you find the answers you need.

Pau, the joint injections don't have that effect.   I've taken prednisone before and it does have that effect internally.

I was prescribed Cortesone when it was first available - waaaaay bac in 1959.  This stuff truly DOES work but it's used more for a "patch" or a quick fix, luci.

Has your doctor suggested to you that you mayeby should have surgery?  And you're trying to not have surgery yet?  If so, just realize that over time, the damage will become more severe and so will the pain.

I remember back a couple of years ago when Pocket had her surgery.  It takes a strong and informed person to go ahead and that surgery.  That's you, luci.  As Rhune said - talke to your doctor for straight forward info.

Keep us up on this!   Kiss

I have, about one month ago.  My Mom had cortesone injections into her back several years ago and she had not had back pain since then.  And yes, I'm trying to not have back surgery, but this is in my hip joint.
As for back surgery, I've been through two with my little bitty daughter when she was 18 and then a fusion when she was 20, yes, she was so young.  I was a total wreck but hid it from her!

As they say, "when you hurt bad enough, you get it done"
and I'm there!
