Close Encounter of the Rupert Kind

Yesterday was very special for me.  Each year at this time my community, Kokomo, Indiana, celebrates our automotive heritage with a festival and parade.  This year Rupert was the Grand Marshal of the parade.  He grew up in Kokomo.  It is something of a joke in my family that I'm such a Survivor fan.  When my daughter heard that Rupert was coming to town she was on a mission.  He wouldn't leave Kokomo without her getting a photo of me and Rupert together.  Mr. Irish and I always drive our 1958 DeSoto in the parade.  The staging area for the antique cars was next to the float that Rupert and his family would be riding.  My daughter stationed herself next to that float and didn't budge until she heard the policeman's radio say that Rupert was on his way.  She immediately came and got me and we waited for him to show up.  We were sitting there on the grass when, out of the blue, there was Rupert...tie-dye, long curly hair, beard, and all.  The policeman with him kept saying, "no autographs until after the parade".  My daughter said, "he didn't mention no pictures until after the parade".  She caught Rupert's eye and asked if she could take a quick shot of her mom with him and he said, "sure".  He put his arm around me and gave me a huge hug, we both smiled, and it was over.  My daughter had her photo op, I had my very own Rupert bear hug, and the policeman never knew what happened.  Rupert was very kind to all of his fans, especially the children.  He acted like he was really enjoying himself.  His wife is beautiful and his daughter is a real cutie.

Cool  I was telling the addams family about the parade.  Wait until they hear this news!  Grinning from ear to ear.  Nice to 'see' you again too.   Tongue

The last photo is Rupert and his wife.  She is really very pretty.
Their little girl is the one in the tie-dye dress.  His family rode on the float with him and they were a huge hit.  They were cheered the entire parade route.

Note - I have never seen so much tie-dye in one location in my entire life.  There were people of all ages in tie-dyed shirts, everywhere you looked.  I felt out of place in my white DeSoto shirt.

Ohhhh honeygirl!  I don't know how I missed your thread about Rupert!  And your pictures!  Holy moly!  They're all so so great!  The luck of the Irish were certainly with you on that parade day.

How I'd love to feel darlin' Rupe's arm around my shoulders.   :faint:  That must have been such a fun and cool experience for you and yours.  I love your '58 DeSoto.  That was the year I graduated from highschool and the year my grandparents bought a brandnew DeSoto.
