Please let me preface this by saying I am not judging, nor ignoring your consitutional right to bear arms....I just have noticed lately in a couple other forums that  most Americans have guns... I didnt realize how many of you did till now! I dont know anyone with a gun (save a distant relative -and thats just for hunting)...have never held one and never want to..I am shocked actually.. .I am curious so if you wouldnt mind , please tell me if and why you own  one.....

I can tell you why we dont! I have no problem with any American owning one it is a right given us by our founding Fathers. My reason is simple I have no clue how to use one therefore it is NOT safe for me to own one!

I'm somewhere in the middle.  I believe in the right to bear arms and have been hunting and shot guns before, and my parents owned several.  I don't own any myself, but I don't think I need any.  I have small children I'd never want to get near one and I think that a large dog is a better home security device than a gun any day.  I do believe more restrictions should be made on owning a gun and what types of guns should be allowed.  When the right to bear arms was written, they were talking about muskets, not semi-automatic rifles with armour piercing "cop-killer" bullets. I am also certain that this will never change in my life time.  The NRA and affiliated businesses have a lot of money, influence and power and they pull a lot of political weight around. I think politics and funding it's self have to drastically change before we'll ever see any gun laws change, and I just don't see that happening any time soon.

My husband has guns, but I've never been comfortable around them.  I guess when it comes down to it, I believe in the legality of owning firearms, but only for hunting or self defense.  (personally, if I tried to use one, the criminal would probably get it away from me and shoot ME with it.)  I don't think it should be legal to have automatic weapons, and those armour piercing shells, or any of that type.  The right to hunt?  What would you hunt with those?  I shudder to think!

I don't own any guns but most of the family does.  I have been wanting to get one for quite awhile.  Mostly for security reasons due to the fact that the hubby is usually gone and it's just me and the kids.  But then I start thinking about the kids getting hold of it and I put the idea away.  I can't even hide the scissors from the kids, I don't think I would be any more successful with a gun.

Pocket's post sounds like it came from my mouth.  My husband has guns, I hate guns, I'm not comfortable around them and never will be.  He made me shoot one once, but I would never try to use a gun against an intruder because, like she said, they would probably get it away from me and use it to do me in.

That's exactly why I think a big dog is better home defense.  The dog can't be used against you and an intruder is unlikely to pick your home if they hear a dog inside.  Most intruders are looking for easy victims and someone with a dog is not an easy victim, they'll move on to easier pickings, and they can figure out the dog is in there before they try to come in, unlike a gun.

kelby, I am not sure I agree with you here but it would not surprise me.

My father collected guns.  He was also an avid hunter.  Mainly for quail.  Somehow he passed this hobby down to my brother who also actively collects.  I don't understand the fascination, but I will say that my brother is raising his family in downtown Los Angeles so he probably feels the need to be able to "protect" them.

I had family visiting me over the 4th weekend and the subject came up about a gun.  Seems they think I should have one to protect myself because my home is in the woods and very isolated.  I said you think I need a gun to protect myself from the wildlife? And they said no.  Don't you ever worry about a break in or an attack by a person?  Sorry, but no.  I've been trained in self defense and I also keep a large and heavy flashlight under my bed and under the front seat of my car.  And thanks navywife, scissors are not a bad idea either.  lol.

most is a strong word... alot is probably a better one...

to add to Rhune's comment about the reference to muskets....  good argument and historically accurate.. I would wonder how that analogy/connection would add up to other "freedoms" then vs. now...??

I have one I got when I turned 16. It is an old "cat gun". They called them this as it is a 22 rifle that only fires low velocity shells. I have fired it maybe 10 times in my life and all at firing ranges.

My Dad is an avid gun collector but that is his thing, he collects antiques. He has about 45 guns in his home but no shells for any of them.

My gun sits in a closet. I have no shells and never get it out. I would get rid of it but it was given to me by my grandfather the year he died so it has some sentimental attachments.

Nothing against guns here so long as people use them wisely.

Speaking of California. When my brother lived in Desert Hot Springs he used to camp. They always took guns with them as there were hill folk that would go after campers if you were not careful. He said twice people just appeared out of the darkness, he and his buddies would lay a gentle hand on their weapons, the strangers would leave without a word.

Good question Kelby -- I've often wondered the same thing.

Have any of you seen Bowling for Columbine?  (Moore looks at the right to bear arms and rate of gun violence in the US.)  Although I realize the movie is a portrayl of his opinion, I question some of the same things he does.

I don't think I would be able to sleep in a house with guns.  I even get uncomfortable seeing one holstered to someone's belt.

I'm probably naive .. but I just don't understand.

My father owns a gun, his father was a policeman and it's the gun that he carried with him everyday.  i don't know if its loaded or not. He keeps it in a safe that i no one but him has the combo for.

I have no problem with hunters having guns. I have a problem with criminals having guns, but alas, you usually don't know that they are a criminal until they use it, so what can you do?

LOL Pocket!  Borad, how do you get hill folk in Desert Hot Springs, isn't it still a dessert?

My Dad always had a rifle, our sons have guns, my husband has guns.  My uncles, cousins and friends have guns.  They are locked in a gun case or a safe.    Most men I know have guns.  I've never thought that much about it.

And yes, we have a revolver hidden close enough to get to it, should someone break into our home.  First the alarm would go off and we would have time to get the gun.

I've never thought that much about guns being in our home since they are locked up and my husband hasn't fired one in so long, it might backfire, ala "Elmer Fudd"!

Our Constitution states "the right to bear arms".  When this was made most people had to hunt and kill their meat.  Also protect their home against whatever would harm them in 1776.

If we all took a vote, I'm sure it would be a majority that none of us like guns.  I don't , but I also know how to use one.

LL, I agree with your family, you should have a gun.
Do you have an alarm system?
Perhaps a puppy, like a border collie, for they are protectors.
Motion lights on the outside of your home?

Don't assume it couldn't happen to you.  Not at all meaning to scare you, but , "procaution is worth a pound of cure", as the older folks used to say!

I do believe when there is a strict gun law, only the ones who shouldn't have a gun will!
