Depression

Just stumbled upon this at msn.  Very interesting.  Does anyone here deal with depression or have family members who do?  I can say from experience that most people do not understand it and that it is a chemical imbalance and should be treated.  I also believe that it is hereditary.  So many ppl just say "snap out of it" or "what is causing it".  With chronic depression, there IS no reason.  Instead of supplying the love and concern necessary, they simply don't know how to deal with it.  Do you?

there is also that fear and anxiety of being labelled "crazy", "psycho", being on medication, or connect with the possible circumstances that your parents did something to you....

I'm seeing alot of antidepressant medication and adult ADD advertisements lately....

LL, have you ever had your hormone levels checked?  I know EEG suffered horribly from depression for years and finally after finding the right dr found out that it was really related to a hormone imblanance and has been doing sooooo much better since then. Smiley   K-A

You should drop her a note and ask her about that so she can potentially tell you what to get tested for exactly to find out if that's the problem you might be having.  And here's a hug for you too, LL.

My best friend is Bi-Polar. In High School he was sent to the funny farm when he lost touch with reality. He was there for almost 6 months, heavily sedated to the point he can barely remember those days.

I met him 3 years after HS and we became instant friends. We roomed together for 7-8 years and I have seen him on his best and worst. I know full well how bad depression can affect someone as I have seen it in all its glory.

Chemical inbalances are hard on people. They have no control over their actions for the most part. To me it seems like they are schitzophrenic to a point as they can be two completely different people.

Depression is one thing, Bi-Polar is another.
There is depression associated with menopause, clynical depressiion and other areas of stress in one's life.  A person wanting to sleep constantly will usually have clynical depression, and I did say usually.  This is the best kind.  As the doctors say, this is the best kind of in sleeping it gives the part of the brain that had a short circuit, if you will, time to heal.  I've had this kind of depression and it is curable with time and medication.

Bi-Polar Disorder is on another chapter in the book, or another book altogether.   I'm very well acquainted with this disorder,  only because I was subjected to the mood swings of a former husband.  This is not what Lakelady is talking about at all.  Don't confuse the two, please!

Anyone living in the house with an untreated Bi-Polar patient has reason to be clynically depressed!  I did what any level headed woman in the world would do, removed myself from the scene over 27 years ago.  The horror of not knowing what kind of a mood the person will be is terrifying.

Now you know why I'm so happy with my husband of 20 years today Grin  He's most always in a happy mood and likes himself, not conceited but just likes himself.  This is good!

thanks for re-initiating this discussion on depression and for the links you provided.   I am premenopausal as well and I know that I will face some challenges in the next decade.
