I will be going on a mission trip with my diocese to Tram, Kentucky. It's in the eastern part of the state, right near Pikesville and Prestonburg. So I'm actually quite excited to be leaving for my trip to Kentucky. I'll be going to a small "holler" called Tram. The group of 14 other people I will be traveling with will be living in a small cabin that doesn't have running water for two weeks. I went last year and it was an eye opening experience. For the two weeks I'm there, I will be serving poor people of the Appalachian Mountains by performing simple construction tasks, like attatching windows and/or gutters, painting, carpeting, shingling, etc. It's such an amazing experience because the people are so appreciative of what our tasks and offer so much of themselves to us, even though they have nothing compared to us.

However, I will be gone for 2 weeks so even though I don't post too much, I will be unable to post even sparatically like I do! Take care, much love to all of you! God bless every single one of you!

So here I am, 2 weeks later. I'm a lot tanner and have terribly scratchy legs from the awful bugs. (Apparently, bugs love me!) I learned how to shingle a roof during the last week and I have become quite proficient at using a hammer. No serious injurires, although I did fall off a ladder and get a lovely bruise!

I thought I'd detail my trip more, so here goes!

On Saturday morning, the entire group met at St. Boniface church and prepared to leave at 10:00. Unfortunately, one girl from Green Bay thought we were leaving on Sunday so she was 1 and 1/2 hours late. We drove down to a church in Indianapolis where we spent the night. It was here that I first ate at White Castle, which is quite possibly the most disgusting restaurant in the entire world.

Woke up early Sunday morning, at about 6:00 and departed for Kentucky. Arrived at our cabin at approximately 3:00 Eastern time and set up tents, picnic tables, and scrubbed everything down. Groups were also split up so we knew who we were working with. I found out that I was on home crew so I got to start planning the school program for the kids in the hollow.

During my week on home crew I got to spend a lot of time with the kids that I met. They were all very good kids and a lot of fun to hang out with. As members of home crew we were also responsible for chores and preparing dinner. I learned some very valuable cooking skills during this week! (And I got to spend some time tanning!

On the weekend, we had a lot of fun! On Friday we went to see a performance of "Into the Woods" at Jenny Wiley Theatre in Jenny Wiley State Park which is near Prestonburg, KY. The performance was awesome! All of the performers were very great for their roles. It was kind of sad because the actress who played Little Red Riding Hood sprained her ankle when she slipped on the wet ampitheatre stage. On Saturday we went to a flea market, went swimming, did laundry, and went line dancing at the State Park. It was a very fun time!

Then during my week on work crew, I learned how to shingle a roof! I was so proud of myself because I had never done much hammering in my life before, but I've become fairly proficient with a hammer. It took our crew an entire week to finish the roof because there were 3 layers of shingles that we had to rip off first. I never knew how big of a process shingling is. I now admire roofers! I also had a little accident. I was climbing the ladder to get on the roof when it kicked out from under me because it wasn't based properly. Luckily, Paul was on the roof and he caught me arm so my fall was cushioned a little bit. My arm and hip are both covered by bruises, but it could have been a lot, lot worse.

Ripping off all those old shingles is a huge job.

I am so glad you were not hurt more badly. It's a dangerous job. I agree with you that roofers get my respect.

Glad you had a good two weeks. You did good.
