prayer request

My Mother in Law is flying right now to Toronto from Sault Ste. Marie and we are taking her directly into emerg to see if she can get seen by a neurosurgeon immediately.

My husband is picking his mom up from the airport at 5:30 tonight and taking her straight to the hospital emergency from there with a copy of her CT scan she had done 6 weeks ago.

Please pray for the medical doctors and technicians who will be helping us get a diagnosis of her condition.  Please pray for strenght for my husband and I as my in laws will be staying at our home.  Please pray for my MIL and FIL as they are treated in the hospital tonight and tomorrow.

There's lots more to this story but we need to at least get her in and getting a diagnosis.

I will reserve my comments about the Canadian referral system she's been stuck in interminably for later.   If family didn't take initiative then nothing would happen. Not to mention if family didn't have connections to folks to get the necessary answers.

cutting the rant short.  I will likely be off for a while.

Thank you..

Cynthia

PS I noticed in another thread that MzWings is also on a waiting list to see a neuro-specialist.  MzWings please DO go to emerg if you have headaches.  Go now and get seen.  The delays we have taken with my MIL may prove to be not good.  We should have gone straight to emergency before but we didn't think that was an option.  We now know it is.

Addams and Family, may you have the strength to get through this sad time.  Anytime a parent is sick and not their usual self, it's heart wrenching for the family.  God Bless.

I hear the frustration in your post, addams.  I hope everything goes well, and she does get evaluated by a neurosurgeon ASAP.

thank you everyone for your prayers.  I can't believe the roller coaster of this week.

There is good news.  thank goodness.  After 6 weeks of diagnosis of hydroencephalus (cause unknown) and trying get my mother in law scheduled for neurosurgery for a shunt she has finally seen the proper doctors.

My MIL is not well with lots of mental faculty deterioration in a very short time together with gait disturbances and alot of falling down and has hurt herself more than once.   The deterioration has been sudden and she had a CT scan done in small town Ontario and told she had benign hydroencephalus.  Which means you are getting old and you have water pressure on your brain and she was booked to see a surgeon nearly 3 months after that appointment/assessment.

Well we all worried like the dickens that she was going to be OK waiting that long.  the proverbial shit hit the fan yetserday morning when my husband and I saw spoke with an excellent doctor at a major teaching hospital here in Toronto.  Keep in mind that our problem is not having excellent doctoros and medical systme the problem is getting in to see them because of doctor shortages and the fact that we are not allowed to buy private services.  It's a system of equality and so we all wait in the same line ups. anyway that is for another day

SO, this internist says "you cannot diagnose benign hydrocephalus simply from a CT scan.  There is a really good chance that it is not benign and she shouldn't wait more than a week to get a shunt without possible serious damage not to mention the possibility of underlying causes continuing to be present".

He said we were to take her immediately to emergency which was not easy since she now lives a 10 hour drive away.

I'll skip the rest and get to the punch line.  Seems the small town doctor doesn't have a clue and after all of this there is no hydrocephalus at all.  He can't even read a CT scan properly .  AFter all the worry.  Plus MIL has dementia setting in (I could have told them that) and needs to see a different specialist.

So although we were up nearly all night last night she was fully assessed by very good staff and was properly diagnosed.  They did another CT scan to make sure and had several neruosurgery consultations.  So it saved us a trip to Chicago by taking her to emerg not to mention that all of this is paid for by our health care system.  (except for the plane fare)

the important thing now is that there are medications that can slow the dementia and she needs these assessments (the small town doctor missed this as well).

There is much to be done but we can take neurosurgery off the list.  Thank the Lord.

Bye for now
