New credit card??
« on: Jul 31st, 2004, 2:39pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

My husband and I are not big credit card users.  We have a couple, just because it helps our credit rating; however we don't use them much.  Recently, my daughter and I were in Dallas shopping at a mall, and I was amazed at the number of stores that wouldn't take checks.  Apparently the world would love for us all to use credit.  EEk, am I the only one who sees the danger of this?  Anyway, I have decided that if that's the way it has to be, I need a credit card that will benifit me.  This afternoon, I have been researching cards.  I think I want a miles card, but I don't want to have a huge annual fee.  The Discover miles is only $30 annually.  Visa and M/C are both from $65 to $90, but they give you more free initial miles.  Do any of you use rewards cards?  What do you like about yours?  What are your thoughts about credit cards in general?   What do you dislike about yours?  Which one would you suggest for me?  I'm not concerned about percentage rates, we pay ours off each month.  Suggestions?

I use a debit card, keeps me out of trouble.  Yes, we do have two credit cards, but neither are reward cards and we're to lazy I guess to change them

You're right, stay as far away from them as possible.  We don't like to pay for something after "we've done it, worn it,  seen it or ate it"!

Yeah it feels really different to pay later for a thing that you got tired of, destroyed or such... It brings a lot in your mind... "what if I didnt buy that?"... "what a waste!"

Better to enjoy/get disappointed of something that you paid for, regrets dont come as frustrating as credit cards.

I got my first credit card ever yesterday.  Cool

I know I will have to be extra carefull because I tend to spend more than I can afford. Thats why I never had any credit cards...I wanted to stay away from trouble.  The debit card has been my good friend for over 10 years now.

This one is a student card, very low credit limit, but as you said, it helps credit rating...if used diligently.

I use a Visa Check card also, can use it anywhere I would use a credit card, and comes straight from the account just like writing a check.

We have several "miles" reward cards that we pay off every momth instead of paying cash.
We have earned many free airline tickets in the past several years.
My husband calls the credit card companies and asks to have them remove the annual fee as he is a good customer, and they DO IT!
He also hints that he might go with another company without a fee......... Grin

My personal experience has been that Capitol One is not a good credit card company to do business with.

Personally I would keep the annual fee to a minimum.  If you think it's a good deal for the extra cost to buy the card with the higher points then try to remember to switch after the first year.

I recently read that the credit card companies have a name for folks who pay off their balances every month.  They call them dead beats.  Well in my book you are all very smart.

Thanks everyone!  If they want to call us a deadbeat, that's ok.  It's crazy to pay interest on a credit card.  I have an aunt who continually transfers balances, and closes credit card accounts.  I think that's crazy too.

Mum, Bumper had given me the almost same advice as you, about having the annual fee nulled.  I will certainly attempt to have that happen.

I did get a miles card, and with the way I shop, a free flight should be in the making Wink   I have found out that I need some dental work done too, I might as well get a vacation out of it. Grin

My husband also got  with the credit card people about no fees.  It seems they do what they have to, to keep customers.
I don't blame you for not worrying about being called a deadbeat,  we don't!

We haven't switched to one with miles because at this time, it isn't a big thing with us.  When we can no longer fly as we do, then we'll be more concerned and get one  Or by then we might be too old to care about traveling.

we have only one credit card the MBNA card from L.L Bean. There is no annual fee, we pay off the balance each month and earn BEAN BUCKS on all purchases and double points if we purchase right at Beans.  We try to charge as much as possible with this card, my husband even pays for large $5,000 purchases for certain things for school with the card and gets reimbursed and we paid for our new car with this card so we get a lot of spending money for use at Beans. We have $70 right now to use for anything in the store or catalog or we can just buy gift certificates with the money to give away at Christmas. I love my MBNA card from L.L.Bean, never had a single problem and I can pay the monthly bill online.

LOL Sheisback!!  I hope you have one that will work for you.  Just listen to all of us here, pay off your balance each month; that interest really adds up.  Plus, a credit card is a great way to boost your credit rating, before my husband and I starting using one, we had a sorry credit rating (not because of a lack of payment, but because of a lack of credit); now it's 8.02.  Our banker says that's a great score.

Yes, credit rating is the reason I asked for a credit card. Lucky me, this one has a very low credit limit, so I wont get into any trouble.

I went shopping yesterday and I did not use it.  Grin

Maybe today ?  Wink

I rarely use my card.  If I buy gas at a pump that is card only, then I use it.  Or if I'm out of checks.  My internet service is on a card.   In all cases, I pay the balance at the end of the month unless we had to use it for something major.   I guess I'm a deadbeat too.

However, when we had a family at home, most of the time we carried a balance.  Those kiddos and their needs are expensive.
