Prayers for Florida
« on: Aug 13th, 2004, 4:36pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Keeping all our friends and relations in Florida in our prayers especially those on the Gulf Coast around the Naples, Sarasota, Tampa Bay area

Quote:
Storm makes landfall near North Captiva Island, Florida, about 4 p.m. with 145 mph winds
Storm surge forecast to be 10 to 16 feet
At least 500,000 without power in Florida
Charley as powerful as Hurricane Hugo, which killed 82 people and caused $7 billion in damage in South Carolina in 1989

Quote:
In the areas in Charley's path, the ground is already saturated with water from two storms that have just moved through.

That means high winds can uproot trees more easily; farmland and other rural areas can absorb less water; rivers expand; and seemingly safe areas can become dangerous.

"Approximately two-thirds of the deaths associated with hurricanes occur in inland counties, eighty percent of the deaths are associated with flooding, and about half of the deaths are associated with inland flooding," says Hoke.

They are saying this storm could do as much, or more, damage than Hugo which came through in 89.

My prayers are definitely with them,

One of the sad things is I read that some of the people in areas such as Clearwater ignored the evacuation warning, saying that they would believe it if they saw it, as a serious hurricane hasn't been through that area in 100 years.  Lets hope for a zero casualty on this...

We must remember all the folks in the flood areas that the
damage isn't as bad as predicted.  GOD BLESS

I will be thinking of the people in florida, especially for Serenity, (who hasn't posted here in awhile, but I keep in touch with) who has 3 young children and another on the way, and lives directly in the path of this storm.

Say Bumper, is your lake house in harm's way of this hurricane today?  Or has it passed through already?

rcs mum - when the power is restored to Florida please do let us know how your home fared.  I was thinking of you.  Thank goodness you were in Maine.  I have one internet friend in Florida and we have still not heard from them.  They were not in the storm's pathway though.
