Let's Talk About Dental Care

Today was my bi-annual dental cleaning and check-up.  I HATE to go, but know it is important not only for my teeth but for my well being to stay healthy as well.

Do you know that how a person's teeth are affect their total health?  If a person has bad teeth which also may be infected and require antibiotics, they also may have other serious health issues.

I've not always been a twice a year check-up person.  I can thank my husband for he is!   He is also a smoker so it is important for him to get regular checkups.  So for 20 years I've been a regular dental checkup person.

We tend to think that if our teeth are staight and white we don't need to go, WRONG!   Flossing is so important each day and I HATE to do it also, but struggle through it!
I found the following on a Dental Site and wanted to share it with all of you for I want you to have good teeth and better health.  Read on and if you'd like to share you dentist stories, post away!

"Dental care is central to workforce issues. One example of the larger effects of people’s oral health is how it affects people’s job performance – and even getting jobs to start with. Welfare to work organizations may be a good source for data that shows the relationship between oral health and hiring rates, absenteeism from the workplace and similar issues. Even if welfare to work groups – or similar groups – lack hard data, they may be a source of compelling anecdotes that will help to communicate the importance of dental care."

You wonder why I've posted this thread?  I feel it is important to discuss, for one of our beloved friends had severe dental work and now is in a grave condition, most likely starting from or contributing to teeth infection.
Happy Flossing Grin

Deal with it and go or you may have serious health problems later, like Huntington's Desease, for one.

Last March, I went to the dentist 6 times. I had major work to be done in there. I have neglected my dental the last years, and I wont do that again !

It hurts... but now I enjoy having ice cream and eating steak without any pain !

Luci, you are correct about this.  Mr. Irish and I had been faithful about going for our "six-month" check-ups.  We went to the same dentist for 25 years (that was our mistake).  He was of the "old school", no preventive dentistry, only cleaning and visual check-ups.
He didn't believe in periodic, full mouth, x-rays.  When he decided to retire, we went to a friend of our daughter's that we have known since the girls were in kindergarten.  She was appalled at the condition of our mouths.  We both had gum disease, which has been treated and is much improved.  Mr. Irish ended up losing a couple of teeth and I have numerous new crowns to show for the years of neglect.  I had no idea we were in such trouble.  We thought we were fine, when the truth was we were both very near to dental disaster.  The moral of this story is, be sure you are getting quality dental care.

The most painful part about going to the dentist is the bill!!!  Shocked  We don't have a health plan that includes dentistry, so it is hard for us to go as often as we should.

You so correct!  Thankfully my husband retired with great benefits that he had for the years he worked for the company.  We do have dental insurance, but do you know what my part was on a crown?  $1500.00.  I could have had the tooth pulled, but I want to keep my teeth!

I do have a mouthful of fillings, crown and a bridge on the bottom.
When I was 5 yrs old, a dentist opened an office in our town.  Wanting me to have a healthy set of teeth, my Mom took me to the dentist.  He was going to fill the tooth without any deadening, I started to cry, he hit me on the leg.  My Mom came running in and took me home and we did not go back.  Shortly after, he closed his office and moved on.  Of course the whole town heard about iti for the waiting room was full.  Since that time, I was horrified to go to the dentist for years.   On one dental visit when I was a teenager, he injected the deadening to fill a tooth and I passed out.
So, my dental visits haven't been so great.  The value of healthy teeth and gums and prevention of any other deseases that could happen is worth the trip to the dentist to avoid it, if I'm lucky!   At least I'm doing my part Grin

I have bad childhood memories of the dentist.  Embarassed

My first cavity was filled when I was around 6 or 7 and I had an allergic reaction to the novacain that was used.  My lip swelled to the size of a baseball.

During my teen years, it was discovered that my teeth were crooked because my mouth didn't have enough space for all the adult teeth.  Long story short, I've had seven adult teeth pulled from my mouth.

No!  I don't look weird and gappy!  :laff:  My teeth straightened out (with the help of braces), moved around, found their places and filled in the gaps of the missing teeth.  I have a nice smile and you'd never know that I am less seven teeth to look at me.

It got to the point, though, where going to the dentist was so traumatic for me that I'd nearly throw up or have crying fits while in the reception area.

BTW, Luci, that is AWFUL about that dentist hitting you.  If that had happened in this day and age, your mom could have dragged his abusive butt to court...and you would have gotten enough in damages to pay for dental visits for the rest of your life!

Luci that was a quack, not a dentist.....a mean spirited quack.

After many years of dental work, I finally found something that works for me.  I started using mouthwash before brushing morning and night (the yucky kind) about 5-6 years ago, and it has greatly reduced the amount of plaque build up in my mouth and the amount of tooth decay.  If only I had known.  I'd thought that regular flossing and brushing would do as well.  I have a mouth full of crowns, root canals, re-crowns and partials.  I went in for a broken tooth last month, and my dentist for 25 years, thought I hadn't had my checkup for over a year.  Nuh-uh!  I was in this spring, with a loose crown.  Had my cleaning and exam then. NO FILLINGS. My dental file is so full, they finally start using more than one envelope, so he lost track.

BTW, I didn't have deadening until I was 18, and I had lots of fillings.  This was way before Floride. The family dentist then charged more for novacaine, and I was trying to save the family money.

Did you know that once you have a joint replacement, you always have to premedicate to prevent infection which could lead to rejection.  Also true for some heart problems as well as other things.

I know my Mom let him have it and the waiting room cleared out shortly after that incident.  People heard of this and did not want him there.

hmm... I'm not much a regular dental checkup person.. but I'm struggling on doing this specially now that I had a good and friendly dentist.. though she is expensive....

she would always tell me... 'Paul you didn't flossed again.. ' hehehe... well... I try flossing for a week.. then I stop.. it's hard to do.. plus a little messy.. hehehe...

she would also tell me that I should brush my teeth properly.. up and down.. and not sideways... 'coz I'm have tooth abrasions that causes my gum to recede...

the downside I had with my dental problems a few years back when I had my molars root-canalled was that my jaws began clicking.. that I sometimes I feared that I might have a locked-jaw...  the year after... I had the same tooth jacketed...
