Is Your Grocery Store Closing?

Our local Ralph's is closing and a Vons in town only to reopen later under NEW names! My guess this is avoid Union contracts. This poses a problem for us as Ralph's is only store within walking distance of our house. I wondered if any of you are seeing your local Grocery stores closing?

Not at this time, it happened years ago when the chains moved in,
but we could walk to two now if we wanted.

From what I understand this is a business move to get out of Union Contracts Store will reopen under same ownership but different name voiding union contract. Example Ralph's becomes Kroger (which already owned Ralph's) Von's becomes Safeway (which has mutal ownership only Safeway moved out of California)

I worked at a Sentry Foods for 2 and 1/2 years.  It was around for 24+ years.  And then when Super Wal-Mart came into town, we were forced to close may be 4-6 months after they had opened.  I know first hand about stores closing.

As a matter of fact, a new grocery store + store fronts has opened close to our house.  I'm elated because they have great prices and their little gas station is making our BP next door lower their prices to stay competitive!  Cool

So Pilar is a good cook, huh?  I don't believe it.  To prove herself, she needs to bake cookies and send them to all of David's internet friends.

Or, we could all go over to David's house for Pilar's cooking.  Hey, I'd even do the dishes!

Wal-Mart also shut down most of our town's store's.  Thankfully, I'm not a hater of Wal-Mart, because I'd be in trouble.  They have also helped the gas prices in my town too.  I buy the shopping card, and save .03 per gallon at the gas pump.  No one here can beat their price. (I just wish they had a better meat selection)

Exact same thing happened at a Mom and Pop grocery store that I worked...  Super Walmart came in, we couldn't compete with the prices...

Alot of towns are rejecting Walmarts from coming in because of that reason.....

Personally, I like them.... My mom works at one.... You can't bite the hand that feeds you....

My family used to be on a Wal-Mart boycott.  It's really hard to do that though.  I've given up on it, as has my father.

We have had several of the new "Wal-mart Neighborhood Market"s open up here recently. They are a grocery store only version of Wal-Mart.  They all kinda cropped up overnight.

Reading this thread I realize how different the San Francisco Bay Area is from the rest of the country.  We have Safeway, Albertsons, Lunardi's, PW, CostCo, Cosentino's and so many more within a 10 mile radius.

I live in San Jose which is South of San Francisco and within 5 miles we have at least 5 supermarkets.

I never knew this was a problem, so what do you do when your supermarket closes?
