Trying To Keep It Pretty
« on: Sep 10th, 2004, 1:09pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

My grandmother once told me that it didn't matter to her what
size I was, "just keep it pretty."  Most of you know I have
tried to "just keep it pretty."  Unfortunately the more I aged,
the more weight I gained, in spite of trying to watch what I
ate and trying to stay active.  Keeping it pretty wasn't enough
to thrive in the world we live in.

Each of us is impacted by body image, whether our own or someone
we know.  We place so much importance on what we see and what
we find physically attractive.

Don't get me wrong, we should all take good care of our bodies
but often we fail to consider the heart and spirit of the people
who live inside bodies that are challenged by obesity, physical
impairments or handicaps.

Most of the time perceptions are not the true reality.  We make
a LOT of assumptions about people based on how they look, and
those who dare to get behind the shell of the physical still
struggle with what is seen.

Today I ask each of you to take a second look at the obese lady
in the grocery store, the man in the wheel chair or even a child
who has a physical or mental disability.

All people are not as they seem, the pretty is on the inside.

Thanks, but it isn't my words, I copied it from an email.  Since we've been discussing these same things, I felt it appropriate.

Hi Luci,

I haven't read the thread you are referring to, however I wanted to comment on this one.

Sometimes I giggle like I am still 13, sometimes I flirt like I did in my 20's, sometimes I am serious as I was in my 30's.  Now that I am in my 40's, I still feel like the teenager I was at 13, the party girl of my 20's and the most important part of my life being a mother and raising my daughter in my 30's.

I may look different...but if you look very closely my heart is the same.  Of course my heart has felt terrible crushes, unabandoned love, mature love, motherly love and lots of heartache throughout the years.  Just as you have or will.

My body has changed and grown some, but my heart has grown even more.  If we could just see peoples hearts instead of their outer appearance, life would be so much more fulfilling.

I want to make an effort to see peoples hearts first, how about you?

You've said it very well, Goddess.  When I was younger I looked more at the outside, one learns what is important as years go by.
What is in a heart is definitely most important than what is on the outside.
Too many people still can't see this!  Sad for them!  We do go through different stages inl ife, I think it's also called maturing.
