It's hard for me not to launch into a political rant over this subject.  When OPEC pulled this same crap on us when Clinton was in office, he quickly opened the reserves, forcing OPEC to lower their prices.  He just didn't play this game.  Bush has largely refused to open the reserves and play hardball over the prices, and that's just frustrating.  The end result seems to be us losing the game that's being played over the prices.  I know at least two low income people who have lost their jobs over this, because they could no longer afford to pay for the gas each week to get them to work and back. They both live in an area where there is no public transportation as an alternative and both worked low wage jobs, to barely keep their families off welfare, and now because of the absurd gas prices they are back on welfare.  *gnashes teeth*   Sorry, I'll march my ass back to the political forum...  Roll Eyes

Yeah, we don't have public transportation in my area, either.  If you don't have a car or if you can't afford to put gas in it, you're up a proverbial creek.

The gas prices have dictated that we stayed at home instead of taking any kind of a family vacation this year.  We just can't afford to drive anywhere.

Let me go a step further.  I stay at home to educate my children.  We make tremendous financial sacrifices to do this.  However, I have to wonder: if I were to go out and find a job, would it really help us financially after the fact that I'd have to buy a new wardrobe, buy gas, put wear and tear on our car, pay more taxes, and put my kids in school where there would be something to pay at school every other week--not to mention that the kids and I would all have to start paying for lunches away from home?

Sorry, I was just thinking aloud there.

Nod, I currently work 3 part time jobs, two of which I am able to do from home, so I can raise my own kids.  We do education outside the home, but I'm fortunate enough to live across the street from a grade school and so I walk my oldest son there and back each day.  My youngest isn't doing any school yet, but he'll probably do preschool next year, which is the killer.  Preschool cost us $110 a week for my oldest son, for 4 hours a day.

Rupey, I swear we were separated at birth.  I came close to starting this thread at least 3 times this week.

$1.90 a gallon is just freaking me out.  And it's not going down anytime soon.
I've made a lame attempt at trying to find out why the prices keep going up. Rhune I know you do alot of reading and researching.  Could you please point me in the right direction?

The largest problem is the cost of raw oil to us from OPEC right now.  It's risen to $55 a barrell.

Here's a bit I found in an article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A36695-2004Oct15.html?nav= rss_topnews

Quote:
The price of crude oil, from which gasoline, diesel and heating oil are made, rose above $54 a barrel this week. Oil prices are rising as demand has increased around the world, particularly in China. At the same time, oil production is close to capacity. Oil traders have been bidding up prices because of concerns that factors such as pipeline attacks in Iraq and hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico could lead to a shortage.

Gasoline prices in the Washington region jumped to an average of $1.98 for a gallon of regular unleaded yesterday, up from $1.84 a month earlier, according to a survey by AAA. Diesel fuel -- used to run trucks, construction equipment and other heavy machinery -- surged from $1.92 to $2.17 over the past month. And the Energy Department estimates that users of home heating oil, natural gas and propane will be paying markedly higher prices this winter. The average heating oil bill in the Northeast will rise 28 percent to $1,223, the government predicted.

Rising fuel prices are creating some unwelcome consequences, large and small, for drivers.

Oil breaks $55, a record
advertisement

No repeat of 1970s stagnation, Greenspan says, though tight supplies continue to worry futures traders. Winter heating-oil stockpiles are thin.

By MSN Money news services

U.S. oil hit $55 a barrel on Friday as traders worried over thin heating oil inventories ahead of winter and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan predicted the soaring costs would not crimp economic growth as they did in the 1970s.

U.S. light crude settled up 17 cents to $54.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after setting a new all-time high of $55 during the regular session. London Brent eased 16 cents to $49.93 a barrel on the International Petroleum Exchange.

"So long as supply-demand fundamentals remain tight and inventories remain low, prices will stay strong or strengthen,'' said London energy consultant Geoff Pyne. "High prices have had little effect on demand so far.''

Greenspan, while warning of more serious risks if oil prices were to move "materially higher,'' said he did not see current levels inflicting the kind of pain on economic growth seen in the 1970s.

"The impact of the current surge in oil prices, though noticeable, is likely to prove less consequential to economic growth and inflation than in the 1970s,'' Greenspan told a conference in Washington, adding that over the long haul technology and the transition to alternative energy sources will ensure the world's oil supply met demand.

"In one sense, comments of this nature are just begging the market to spike even higher. If $40 and $45 and $50 didn't hurt, well gee, how about $60? Let's go see,'' said Tim Evans, senior oil analyst at IFR-Pegasus.

No public transportation to rely on, and we'll just have to bite the bullet.    There are fewer trips to the city, etc., in our future.   We can conserve a little bit, since we are retired. What really bothers me is how much is it going to cost to heat the house this winter?

We live about 10--15 minutes from the city.  I try my best to consolidate my kids' activities to a couple of days a week so that we don't have to run into town everyday.  We'd use up way too much gas that way.
