I am from Manila in the Philippines...a Filipino with Chinese heritage....

I speak Filipino (our national language which is predominantly based from the Tagalog dialect with influences from other Philippine dialects and Spanish), English (our second language), and very little of Spanish, Chinese and Japanese....

since last year, I've been to Hanoi in Vietnam, to Singapore, to Austin, Texas and  LA, California, and to Johor Bahru and Penang in Malaysia.... Cheesy  maybe this December we might go to Kuala Lumpur.. Grin

I am also from the Philippines, therefore I am a Filipino (maybe I have 5% Spanish blood, LOL). Main language Filipino, main dialect is Tagalog. Second language is English. I know a few words of other languages, but can't construct a sentence from the words that I know.  Wink

I have lived in Manitowoc, WI for my entire life.  My heritage is German, Czechoslovakian, Polish, and a wee bit of French.  I speak English and am enrolled in Spanish classes, so I can speak some.  Never been to another country.

American of Danish ancestry.  I have lived in Europe and South America.  I speak German and am fluent in Portuguese and...of course, English.  I can also carry on a rudimentary conversation in American Sign Language.

I suspect there are some differences from country to country in sign language, the one used here is commonly called ASL or American Sign Language.

Correct.  Sign language is not universal.  The signs we use here in the United States are derived from a system already used in France.

In England, the alphabet is spelled with two hands whereas it is only one hand is needed to form each letter in the U.S.

In Brazil, the signs are different than they are here, though some look similar.  Still there are some signs that the deaf use here that would be considered rude or vulgar in other cultures!  The U.S. sign for the letter "T" is the thumb stuck between the first and middle fingers.  In Brazil this is a symbol associated with black magic.  In Korea, it is like showing someone here the middle finger.

Also, in our country, there are regional differences in signs--almost like dialects.  In Texas, theys sign "good morning" differently than they do in the eastern states.  I initially learned sign language in Tennessee before I continued learning it in Texas.  When I'd go back home, my deaf Tennessean friends would look at me puzzled when I used signs I'd learned in Texas.
