Places to See Before You Die

I have found a book last week entitled, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die (I posted a thread in the Books forum)... which is a list of places around the world that the author highly recommends to see before you die...

Reading the book, I found that I've bee to 8 out of 1000 places there... and only 1 of the 3 places in Philippines listed there...

Now this inspired me to think ask myself... so what would be that place in the world that I'd like to see before I die....

here they are
1. Petronas Tower in Malaysia
2. Sphinx and the Pyramids of Gyza
3. Eiffel Tower of Paris
4. New York City
5. Great Wall of China
6. Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines
7. Vatican City
8. Jerusalem
9. Acropolis of Greece
10. Taj Mahal of India

how 'bout you?

I have no real interest in seeing those man made points of interest. Yes they all are wonderful places to see in your lifetime but there are more wonderful things to see closer to home.

As am American I feel it is important for me as a person to see all 50 US states and as many National parks and monuments as possible in my lifetime.
So my list would look something like this:
1. visit every state in the USA
2. Visit as many National parks as possible.
3. Spend time in our Nations Capitol visiting buildings where our government works
4. Visit as many of our National museums and art gallaries
5. See the great natural wonders of our country such as Grand Canyon, Everglades, Mt Everest
6. Cross our borders to our 2 neighbors to the north and south, it is always good to know your neighbors
7. Get to know your own state, visit every state park in your state at least once
8. Get to know your own city or town, visit the places of interest, the museums, places that a tourist would come to see.
9. Drive over as many roads as possible in your state, even the back dirt roads
10. Walk your neighborhood, get to know the square mile around you as well as you know the inrterior of your home.

and I can say I am close to doing most everything on my list, I have 1 state left to visit, Mexico as the southern neighbor to visit, and I can always visit more National parks or some of them again many times. I have a few local points of interest left to visit and many more local roads to drive and I think I know my neighborhood pretty well although I discover something new here every day.

I have travelled to many other countries but still find my own country as a facinating place.

:laff:  Oh Bumper!  Might as well go for 2099!

I didn't list any places in the USA, for it is a given!  When I was a Sales Rep I traveled to all the major cities and saw what there was to see in each of them with the time I had!    Below is a list of the places I've toured, so far  Grin
Washington DC, been there for a total of one month.  We saw everything there and loved the trips to DC.
Virginia, loved everything we saw in the state.  I could stay in Alexandria forever!

Our plans are to start in San Diego and travel up the coast of California.
I've been from San Diego to LA.  Also San Francisco and Fresno.
I understand why folks love California, wonderful state, so beautiful!

TEXAS, we've been over every inch of it, of course Cool

New Orleans
Shreveport
Biloxi
Branson
Eureka Springs
HotSprings
Atlanta
Birmingham
Phoenix
Scottsdale
San Diego
Los Angeles
San Francisco
Lake Tahoe
Las Vegas
Albuquerque
Santa Fe
Angel Fire
Denver
Durango
Colorado Springs
Oklahoma City
Tulsa
Nashville
Pidegeon Forge
Knoxville
Asheville
Boone
Blowing Rock
Greensboro
Charlotte
Washington DC
Virginia [Alexandria & Willliamsburg]
New York
Princeton, NJ
Boston
Fall River
Chicago
Miami
Orlando
Ft. Lauderdale
Key West
Oahu
Kauai
Maui

England
Mexico [from one end to the other of the Riviera]
Carribean [all over it]
Belize
Honduras, SA

.............and still have plans to go more  Wink
We both would love to take about a month driving trip.
I can ride with breaks often, back pain  Roll Eyes.  My husband is not one of those guys who wants to drive until he gets there, he likes to break at least every two hours.  Grin  Thank you Lord  Grin
At this time, I cannot be away this length of time because of my Mom.  I might be needed.

Luci I don't see any Maine places listed, you need to come back east! When our boys were 6 and 7 we began our yearly 9 week summer long trips to see the USA. Husband is a teacher and has summers off so as soon as school was out in June we would put the camper on the back of the truck and head out.  We drove completely around the outiside  "edge" states of the USA twice, did the central states at least 3 times and zig zagged back through some of our favorites on our trip to Alaska one year to make sure we had at least visited and stayed overnight at a campground in every state at least once. We spent 5 weeks in Alaska and have also driven through every province in Canada at least 2 times. You just can't see our country by flying in to an airport but you need to get out there on the roads and stay at National park and state Parks. I'm still trying to find a way to drive to Hawaii though.

I have seen Stonehenge and was not impressed. I liked the Scottish highlands more.  I have spent time in Austria, Switzerland and Italy and especially loved the Matterhorn but Venice was crowded and Italy was disorganized and dirty compared to the orderly Switzerland and Austria. Germany is lovely as are all the Swiss Alps countries.  Don't visit Ireland unless you also spent time in Northern Ireland, especially Belfast.  Wales is charming.  While I enjoyed spending  over 5 weeks in the UK and 3 weeks in the Swiss Alps nothing compared to the wonders of the USA.

I am fortunate that my son lives and works in Washington DC and we visit there quite often. I have seen every museum and historic area many times, was there last spring at the opening of the WWII memorial and I am going back again for 4 days over  Veteren's day holiday so we can visit the new American Indian Museum.  if anyone is planning to visit there and needs some suggestions I'm ful of them! DC is a wonderful city to visit as the Subway is easy to use and the museums are mostly free.

Oh Seaglass, I'm so sorry for Maine is one place we both want to see very much!  We both are mouth-watering hungry for some Maine Lobster Grin  And we want to see all of the 13 English Colonies, also Hershey Pennsylvania.

Isn't that huge Christmas Store in Frankenmuth, Michigan?  Is that the correct state?  Wherever it is, I shall find it!

WE grew up with dirt roads, so that isn't a lot of interest to either of us!  As for state parks they are pretty to see, but I would not feel safe in any of them now.  Too much happens.
We talk about getting an RV, if only to drive all over the USA and then sell it when we return.  When we say this my daughter howls with laughter for she doesn't see me in this stage of life at all.  Maybe she doesn't know me.  I can rough it, just don't like to, and my husband had all of the country when he lived on the farm as a boy.  He doesn't even want an antique in the house!

If it is meant to be, we'll get there.  Forget about driving to Hawaii, unless you're taking flying lessons or in training to be a Ship Captain Wink  Drive to LA and get on a cruise ship.  That's what we want to do next!

At least we're planning and dreaming  Grin, when we stop we won't be breathing Lips Sealed

I agree with you about Stonehenge.  In fact I looked at the brochure and opted to not go, for I care nothing about a pile of rocks and do not care how long they've been there.
To go another step, we've never gone to the Mayan Ruins either.  A lot of walking and climbing steps and besides, the first time we went to Cancun, Ruins were outside our hotel.  Enough of that old stuff for us.  Bring on the Margaritas

anyways... so do you guys need to have a visa or something to drive thru Alaska via a Canadian route? for Canadians, do you need a visa to get into the US?   I think Americans need no visa to enter Mexico while Mexicans need one right?
