Share with us your thoughts on camping.

My very first memories as a child are of camping.  Nothing better than the mountains in the spring and fall.

Nowadays, I'd just as soon rent one of those cozy little cabins with a hot tub on the balcony.   Fun fun!   Cool

Camping rocks, love it, try to get out once a year for some backpacking over the mountains. nothing like pitching a tent on the side of a mountain and looking down at the valley as the sun drops below the mountains.

I knew luci would respond this way.   LMAO!

Puff, my brother out in L.A. got the REAL camping genes btw. the 2 of us.  He's into rock climbing, rappelling and all that stuff.   Every time he goes on a trip I kid him and tell him I don't want to be reading one of those camping horror stories in Reader's Digest about him.  lol

I will admit I am not comfortable camping outdoors.  I have read too many abduction/murder/rape stories over the years and have too active of an imagination.  I spend the night in a tent listening to every little sound and wondering what the heck THAT was, and sleep very little.

Last time I went camping with my family, I ended up spending the night in the truck with the doors locked and with my black lab sleeping at my feet.  Grin  That was the best night I ever spent camping, and probably when I had to admit camping was not for me.  Wink

I love camping, especially the sleeping in the tent part of the experience. I have camped most every month of the year, camped in an igloo in the snow, camped in snowstorms and hot summer days.  I haven't missed a year that I didn't go camping and sleep in a tent at least one night in 56 years. I would rather go camping then stay in a hotel, even a 5 star hotel doens't hold a candle to camping. I like camping in National parks or state parks where there are no hookups at the campsites however I do prefer flush toilets to outhouses.  I have been known to set a tent up in my yard and camp here when I can't get away on vacation. For a few years we also owned a pick up truck camper and I always took a puptent along so I could sleep  out. Sleeping in a tent while it is raining out of lovely.   At the moment I own 3 tents, one is a cheap instant up tent that has all poles attached and  you almost toss it in the air and it pops into shape. Stake it down, add the rain tarp and you are camping! Sleeps 2. Then we have a larger pup tent that also sleeps 2 that is very sturdy, the local boyscout troop uses this same style tent.  It is green and has a large rain fly and one can almost stand up inside.  Then I bougth this humoungus tent that is said to sleep 6 or more with an attatched screen room and has dividers that create 3 rooms inside the tent.  Can stand up inside this tent. Good if you plan to stay at a campsite for  a week or so.  My husband relaly has trouble sleeping on the ground and all I ever have is a thin foam pad. I got him a cot but that doesn't seem to make camping any easier for him.  I own probably 8 sleeping bags, one for every temp range.  I have all the camping equipment, coolers, lantern, Coleman stove, kettles,  tarp and ropes, and a shelf space in the garage for everything so I can load up the car at a moments notice and be ready anytime. Growing up my dream car was a stationwagon because it holds camping stuff easily.  I own a Saturn VUE now because it carried camping things with ease but we have still managed to go camping in a small compact car. We have gone backpacking with very little suppleis carried on our backs, and gone canoe camping where everything had to fit in our one canoe and also we had 2 young sons in the canoe with us. I can go camping with everything or very little.  I especially like cooking over a campfire, a foil dinner is my favorite meal when camping. The best part of a camping trip to my husband is sitting in front of a campfire at night and poking the fire for hours. As soon as it gets dark I can't wait to get in the tent, in the sleeping bag and listen to the night sounds. I have never had a close or scary call while camping. Some friends camping at the site next to ours had a skunk chew into their tent at night to get the candy they had inside. In Glacier National park we had to put our tent inside a huge fenced cage and sleep in the "bear cage" as the bears at Glacier have the run of the woods and if you aren't camping in a hard sided vehicle you have to stay in the cage at night.  Alaska camping is the same, make sure to have a hard sided vehicle for camping there. I didn't see any "bear cages" at Denali Nat park campground.  To get that "outdoors" feeling all year long we sleep with our windows open in our bedroom all year long. We don't heat the upstairs of our house and wake up many winter mornings with frost on the blankets. Almost evey night lately we hear the owls and coydogs hooting and singing.  There is no part of a camping experience I don't enjoy unless it is that high pitched laughing drunk woman at the next site partying all night long. I fix them by cooking a noisy breakfast at 6am the next morning. Now I want to go set up my tent in the yard again.. *sigh*

Seaglass, I agree with everything you said!
There is nothing like sleeping in the open under the stars. or on a boat listening to the water lapping gently against the sides, seeing the stars so big you could reach out and touch them!
We always have our windows open, even in Florida we turn off the AIR and open the sliders to the lanai, unless it is still 98 and 98% humidity.

Now I have no problems sitting outside under the stars awake and around the campfire and all of that, very enjoyable!  I like all of camping up until the part where you go to bed.  It's the part where you go to sleep and are vulnerable to anyone else out there that bothers me too much.

Sea, I love hearing about your camping experiences and your enthusiasm.  Cool  If you had a way to post pictures of your tents, I'd love to see them.  I like seeing pictures of people's tent campsites to see how their set up is.  I learn that way.

We're new to camping.  As a matter of fact, we just got back on Saturday from a three-day trip to a state park.  It was lovely.  The leaves were gorgeous and everything was peaceful.  I got to see a doe and her two fauns up close and personal!  I also got to hear raccoons invading the trash cans and creeping toward my tent...before I grabbed my spouse and we ran outside with our flashlight!

We have a tent that our friends gave us.  It sleeps up to six people so for the four of us, it is just right and we still have room for our "stuff."

Sea, as long as my DH goes with us, we'll never be able to "rough it."  He has to have electricity because of a breathing machine he wears at night due to apnea.  So, we don't suffer when we camp.  We sleep on air mattresses, we cook with electricity (I took my crock pot this time!), and since we camp with our dearest friends, we share cooking and campfire responsibilities with them.  They have a pop-up camper, of which we're slightly envious, but I still really like our tent.

We enjoy camping!
 Cool

Right, Rhune.  I'd be lying if I didn't say that those thoughts didn't cross my mind.  For that reason, we keep the kids right beside us (or between us) when we sleep.

Now, I'm not sure which is worse: wearing my earplugs so that I can't hear what's going on outside or sleeping without them and hearing what's going on outside!

I will say this, though--the state park we camp in is very well-run.  They lock the gates to the campgrounds at night and a ranger is on rounds thoughout the night.  The bathrooms there are very clean, too.
