Advance Happy Thanksgiving!.... Cheesy

so.. Thanksgiving would be next Thursday right? and what exactly is celebrated or commemorated during Thanksgiving? All I know in Thanksgiving is it is like the Christmas feast except that the main star of the night is the turkey... well I guess its just a day to give thanks for the year that passed, am I right?

I guess turkeys are starting to mourn as of today... heheheh Cheesy

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep... I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned...the dark meat and white, but I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation, the thought of a snack became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, stuffing with gravy, green beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky with a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees... Happy eating to all -- pass the cranberries, please.

* As far back as 1000 A.D., Native American Indians raised
turkeys for food. Aztec Indians in Mexico were raising them as early as 200B.C.
 * Turkeys originally existed in the eastern U.S. and
Mexico.
 * The turkey industry grosses more than $1 billion a year.

 * The average American consumes over 15 pounds of turkey
per year.
 * Americans consume more than 675 million pounds of turkey
on Thanksgiving Day.
 * Turkey, like poultry, is lower in cholesterol than beef
and many other meats. The dark meat (thigh, legs,) contains more fat and cholesterol than white meat. So, that's why dark meat tastes so good!
 * Male turkeys are called "toms," female turkeys are
called "hens" and baby turkeys are called "poults."
 *  Turkey eggs are tan in color and speckled with brown.
They are about twice as   large as chicken eggs.
 * In 1947, the first presidential pardon was ceremoniously
given to a turkey.
 *    That long, loose skin that hangs down from a turkey's
neck is called a "wattle."
 * Sleepy after the big meal? Turkey contains an amino acid
called "Tryptophan." Tryptophan sets off a chemical chain reaction that calms you down and makes you sleepy.
 * The wishbone is a tradition of Thanksgiving. Allow the
wishbone to dry. Then, two people grasp each end of the wishbone. After making a silent wish, they pull it away. Whoever gets the joint portion gets their wish.
 * Benjamin Franklin argued that the turkey should be the
national bird instead of the eagle. He stated that it was more respectable and a native of North America.

A few years ago, I taught kindergarten.  We made a Thanksgiving cookbook for the moms with recipes the kids made up.  Here are a delightful few:

TIMED TURKEY
"Put some flour, sugar, and chicken inside a turkey and a timer thing on the outside to check if the meat is done.  Put it in the oven and turn it on for 10 minutes.  Pop it out and wait until it cools off to eat it."

FANCY TURKEY
"You put the turkey in the oven and you pour some salt over it.  After the turkey comes out of the oven, you put those little white things on their feet.  You pour water over it and it's done."

VIRTUAL TURKEY
"Get five or ten rolls of turkey. Roll one up kind of like a ball.  Put any kind of food coloring on it.  Roll some up kind of like a fist.  Make a pointy thing to look like a beak.  This makes a colorful turkey."

TURKEY SURPRISE
"Put yellow oil in the turkey and leave it on the plate for a little while.  Put some meat in it.  Put some salt in it and some vegetables and some hot water.  Stir it and put it in the oven.  Cook it for four minutes.  Wait until the turkey cools off and then eat it."

BTW, as a vegetarian, I don't eat turkey at our Thanksgiving meal (Especially not one made by one of those kindergarteners!) but there is sooooooo much on the table at my mom's house to enjoy that I end up quite full anyway.

I look forward to the cheese grits souffle, broccoli casserole, baked potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry relish, bread, plain stuffing, and fruit salad.  My mouth's already watering...

Yes, Paulo, the turkeys are in big trouble at this time of year in our country!

Our country isn't the only one to celebrate Thanksgiving.  I believe the Canadians have their own Thanksgiving on a different date.  (Someone can confirm or deny this.)

When the Pilgrims came to the "New World" in the 1600s, after fighting to survive in a strange place, the Indians befriended them and showed them how to  plant and raise crops--primarily, corn.  After their first successful harvest, the Pilgrims wanted to celebrate by holding a big feast.  They invited the Indians to join them.  Thanks to wild game that the Indians brought with them to the feast, there was plenty of food for everyone.  The Pilgrims thanked God for their harvest and they and the Indians ate and played games and ate for three days!

Even though few of us these days actually raise crops and harvest them, we Americans generally celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering our families together over a big, elaborate meal.  After the meal, the guys loosen their belts and flop on the couch to watch football games on TV. Oh, and there's usually arguing too--but that's another tradition I'll spare you the details of!

Wow, if they are already taking off for Thanksgiving, someone in the company is being very generous.  Most people, if they are lucky, only get Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving here.

So many families live away from each other in the USA now, so most Schools take this whole week.  Nice to have the week free for travel and family.

My family was together on Saturday for the Birthday Party, so we're celebrating our Thanksgiving Day on Sunday, also another Birthday!  This one is 14!
How time flies.  She was 8 1/2 lbs, dark hair and eyes and looked like a papoose.  Our Indian Heritage showed up in her, our first!  I fell in love that day with her  Kiss

....and I've fallen in love with 4 more babies since her Tongue
I'm thankful  for so much, for having these 5 Grandchildren to love and be loved Grin
