Whew!  I've been looking and cannot decide which one would be good for me  Roll Eyes  I'll never be a pro photographer, so I'm looking at the lower end prices.

Does a 5 megapixel mean it is better than a 3 megapixcel?

Someone who knows, tell me please before I  Undecided
against the wall over this issue!

This one is at Wal-Mart, has all the garb needed and is probably more than I will ever do!
So what do ya think?  After all, Kodak has been around a long long time!

luci just buy the damn camera.  I'm sure it will be fine.  No need to pay over a hundred for it though.

Yes, a 5 megapixel camera is better than 3 megapixels.

That seems to be like my Aunt's digital cam, though hers has the circular button (for navigation) on the right.

A little advice about digital cameras . . . .

I had a Kodak, one of those models that use the "docking station".  I was never satisfied with it.  The docking station seemed to overcharge the thing, and the batteries seemed to become "conditioned" way too quickly.  I was never satisfied with the battery life of the camera in that the charger had to be lugged around to charge the camera.  The electronics in the camera went on the fritz after about a year.  I chucked it and went out and bought myself a SONY  Cybershot.  It has the lithium batteries and just a simple cord that can be plugged in to an AC outlet to charge.  A much simpler process.

If you're going to buy a digital camera, look for the following features:

1. Get one that has the rechargable lituium batteries.  Using regular AA batteries will break you and they run down so fast.

2.  Look for a camera that has "optical focus" and automatic focus and exposure.

3.  Look for a camera that has a removable "memory stick" and buy an extra one when you buy the camera.  Most included memory sticks are only about 32 meg. and will only hold about 10-12 pics at the 5.0 megapixal setting.

4.  Look for a camera that you can change (lower) the megapixal setting.  It's nice to have the 5.0 but you will get damn good pics from the 3.0 megapixal setting.  Believe me, 5.0 megapixals shows ALL the warts!

5.  Try to limit the use of the video viewfinder on the rear of the camera, that uses a LOT of battery power.

As I said, having had the Kodak, I am much more satisfied with the Sony!

Cool  Thank you Bumper, your answer is exactly what I wanted and need, for I know absolutely nothing about the digital cameras.  Obviously it shows  Undecided

May I ask you exactly which Canon you have?  Thanks Grin

I currently use a Sony Cybershot DSC-P93, 5.1 Megapixel with 3x Optical Zoom and 3x Digital Zoom...

bumper is right with his post...  Megapixel is just the measurement of how many pixels (dots) it is to make per inch I think...  so the higher pixel, the higher resolution and the bigger size you can print a picture.... higher resolution means that you're picture will be more detailed....

a 3Megapixel can be enlarged I think upto the size of a 6x12 size picture.. while the 5 megapixel is for a larger one... 1 megapixel would be good for upto 4x6 size picture...  so the higher megapixel capability your camera has would allow you the flexibility to print bigger pictures... but higher pixel means higher memory requirement...  so with a higher pixel you need a bigger memory stick...

optical zoom would be the actual zoom with the use of the lenses while digital zoom is just cropping the picture after zooming it digitally....  a higher optical zoom would allow you to have better quality zoomed pictures..

my camera has 7 different modes of predefined settings for night, bright light, simple point-and-shoot, or video mode.. and also has a manual setting.... it uses metal-nickel hydride rechargeable batteries which is the size of a AA standard battery... I can use a regular AA battery for an alternate... though it doesn't last as long as my rechargeable batt...

so I guess you'll have to decide whether you intend to take big pictures....  I'd say a 3megapix good enough but a 5megapix offers you flexibility...Cheesy

luci,  Pau gives good advice.  You can't go wrong with one of the Sony's.  My camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-P10 5.0 megapixals.  I bought a 256 meg memory stick to replace the 32 meg stock one, and use the stock one for a backup.  Although it will take pics at 5 megapixals, I use it most times at the 3 megapixal setting.  More than enough detail for the routine shots.  If I ever want to take pictures of the hair on a spider's ass, I know I can easily switch it to the 5 megapixal setting.  My cam will also take about 90 seconds of video for those "blow out the birthday candle" type moments.  That is a nice feature.  SONY has a large choice on various models of cameras.  You might have to check around, I'm not sure if they make the exact model I purchased any longer.  I checked around and wound up buying mine at an OfficeMax of all places.  I asked to speak with the Manager and struck a deal and got him to reduce the price of the cam and a reduced price on the Memory Stick.  It definitely didn't hurt me to ask if the price was negotiable!  Wink

I saw my cam in a Best Buy store in Austin last August at $300.
