Someone Tried To Hack Into My Computer
« on: Jan 12th, 2005, 11:46am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

A few days ago I received an email from a banking source telling me sometried to hack into my computer from another country.
Needless to say this certainly angered me, so I made sure our security is current.

Very fruitless of them, for no banking information is kekt on our computer.  My husband still pays all billls the old fashioned way!

Anyway I wanted to let everyone know this is happening and to make sure your security on all your computers is up to date!

Sounds like a phishing scam, Luci.  Be careful!  These usually do not come from a real or legitimate source.  How would your bank know who's accessing your computer at home?  They couldn't know, really.  This is someone trying to get you to respond, thinking you are responding to your bank, so they can steal your identity.

I know thzst, for a site sent me an email asking for an update on my information weeks ago.  They got deleted also!

PayPal even wanted an update about the time they were going down!  NOT!  I did not rrespond and even have a new number since we sent flowers to Wings last summer.

No go with this suspicious mind!

luci, good for you for falling for it!  Cool

But I am curious...was the email asking you to call a certian phone number? Were they asking you to log on to a specific address and to "verify" from there your security?

Just curious...

I can't stand those things. There was one time my mom got one of those "Nigerian Scam" emails. It said that some family with our last name died and we got their money. Yeah right.  Roll Eyes

yeah.. better not give your full trust on these email scams....  and I guess like rhune said, a bank may not now if you're PC is hacked unless your PC was used to hack the bank....

I even did a spyware scan this morning Cool
Now I'm definitely "fixed" up!  I probably will do a spyware scan each morning I turn on this computer.

Just for FYI, a bank would never know if someone was trying to hack into your computer unless an employee at the bank walked up to the manager and confessed. Banks do not have any type of program in place to guard the worlds computers......  Grin

You said it was a banking source? if this is someone you know, than maybe they ave more info to why the emailed you what they did.

If you dont know who the person is that emailed you.... than I would suggest that you jusat got blasted, meaning someone sending out false info to random email addresses for shock and scare value.

good on ya though for getting the updated security programs.

Heres my security system.... Two computers! One computer is for internet use, be it gaming or chatting or surfing. My other computer is for all my personal stuff, files, images, video, programs...

My internet computer has only applictations and a big temp folder, so if anyone hacked me, they could only hack into that computer (diff IP's) and all they would find is a bunch of crap from the net...

cheers

I4S, I'm a lot skeptical.  I delete most of the email received, and scan the computer each day on startup!
Sad to say I've lived long enough to not be naiive about trusting everyone or thing!

I used a program called "Spyware Nuker".

Thanks Puff, I deleted it and did not open the email at all, for I was very suspicious.
Same with PayPal was they were disentregrating, but asking for an update!
As I stated earlier, my husband is not into paying bills or personal information on the computer, he's very suspicious Cool

A good time to revive the "protecting your computer" thread.

To really secure your computer you need:

A firewall
A virus scanner
A spy-ware scanner
A ROUTER! - this elimates the majority of hackers and any worm type viruses from ever reaching you.  Most people don't know the importance of a router, but this piece is KEY for your protection.
