things that go bump in the night!!!!!

well here i sit at 3.10am tuesday........i'm not going back to sleep because not only will Jacob need me in about an hour or so but my darling husband will be off to work at 5am.

what am I doing awake at this time you may askHuh??

About half an hour ago hubby and I were awoken by a noise at our front door.....it sounded very much like someone opening and closing our screen security door!

It is a very still summers night....no wind....no hint of a breeze so naturally we thought the worst.....someone was trying to break in! We get out of bed to investigate, both of us slowly walking down the hallway......we near the front door and we hear it again....the subtle sound of a door being closed followed by a rustle in the bushes out the front.

As hubby stands guard at the door i call the police.....I'm told to Stay on the phone until they arrive......I'm told to tell hubby to nothing drastic with the cricket bat his firmly holding......he says he can see a shadow through the stained glass on the front door.

Our dogs are quiet in the back yard so we figure no ones game enough to come through the back. we sit and wait for the police to arrive.

3 minutes later 3 cop cars pull up......lights flashing and with two dogs in tow!!!! Our dogs are no longer quiet.......it seems the wholw sleepy neighbourhood has woken up as front porch lights go on and people in their pjs stand by their front doors to see whats happening..... As we carefully open the front door to greet our saviours...our boys in blue.... we confronted with smiling faces and a torch shining brightly in our faces!

"we've apprehended your intruder mam" they say " and his accomplices"

With a huge sigh of relief hubby and I thank them profusely and ask "how many are there?"

" 4 all up....we'll let them go once we're sure they're ok"

"WHAT" we both reply shocked

It appears our "intruders" were a family of possums.

As the police walked up to our front door they saw a poor little possum stuck within the wire mesh of the security screen.......his family were huddled nearby in a tree.

So guess who has a bright red face right now and a huge apology tro make to the neighbours later this morning Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Anybody else got a story to tell?

I would have called the police, too.  You don't normally think of animals opening doors.    We live in a rural area and have animals wandering through all the time.  I never like to find raccoons or possums on the front porch....and some of them are pretty bold.   I'm always afraid my cat will tangle with one of them.   She's an indoor/outdoor cat.   Once I heard a noise, turned on the porch light and looked out.  The cat was on the bench, looking down at raccoons eating her food.   We stopped leaving food out, but had forgotten that night.   Since then, we bring any food in at sundown.

I would always prefer the "safe rather than sorry" theory. What a story though!  Cheesy

Yes better to be safe than sorry! I feel sorry though for the poor officer who had to get the possum off the door.....apparently he got quite a few nasty scratches!! They seem to think that the possums were going from the tree to our roof but one poor bugger missed and fell, clawed his way along the door and simply got stuck!

Years ago a friend of mine that lived in California at the time came home and opened the door to find stuff strewn around the room and broken and blood spatters on the wall.  He assumed the worst and ran to the neighbor's house and called the police, thinking the whole time someone had broken in and killed his roommate.  The police arrived and went in to investigate and then came back out a few minutes later laughing.  They asked him if he'd also noticed the feathers everywhere....feathers?  It seemed a large seagull had gotten in through a window after somthing that smelled good and couldn't figure out how to get back out, so he freaked out and flew around the room knocking things over and breaking them. He managed to cut himself in the process, which accounted for the blood all over the room.  He felt pretty stupid too, but the police assured him he did the right thing calling them.

What a funny story!
Bec, you should always call the police when things like this happen.
It is so much better to be embarrassed, than never to be able to tell this story to your friends because the perps weren't opossums!

rhune I loved your story.....i would have done thexact same thing.....if I saw blood I'd be running quick smart!

Believe it or not the police actually called the RSPCA ( our animal protection people ) and they came around here a little while ago, they climbed up into our roof to see if that is where the possums had made their home and to check that the "Intruder" wasn't injured!

yep....we have furry family living in our roof and all are well! We were asked if we wanted them removed because they can do damage to the wiring and such but we decided to leave them alone.......anyway if they go another possum family is sure to move in!

The only thing we're worried about now is what if in the future we hear noises again and think it's only the possums again and it's not!  The police have assured us they'd rather pry possums from a door 10 times a week than have to carry body bags out of the house!

Bec, I sopke to my husband about possums in the attice just now.  He is a licensed Electrician.    He says you should reconsider and get them out.  If they cut into the electrical wiring it could cause a fire.  Anytime any animals/varmint are in the attic, they need to be removed.
May be you and you rhunky gym guy will talk this over and call the people back to come remove them.  That possum family would like their own habitat better anyway Wink

We had possums in Texas until my roomie got a black lab.  They didn't care for the dog and moved pretty quickly after that.

It's surprising that possums would even come near our place with all the pets we have at the moment.

My cat Ruby had a litter of kittens several weeks ago so we have 5 cats and 5 dogs at the moment.

We normally only have 3 dogs but my dog Jorja had puppies a few months ago....we sold all but one so we're still trying to find a home for that puppy......and we had a stray dog wander into our yard about 2 months ago.....even though we found her owner they didn't want her anymore so now we're keeping her until we can find her a home also!!!!

5 cats, 5 dogs, 2 kids and 1 husband....boy oh boy....no wonder I'm always tired!

As far as sharing your home with wildlife, I'd advise you not to.  If the possums can be safely trapped and taken to the bush, that's the way I'd go.

My MIL's house became a haven for raccoons.....in the middle of HOUSTON!  She thought they weren't doing any damage, but they were.  They left messes, and weakened the ceiling...and in onespot the ceiling collapsed.    They had a good life, eating the pet food and a safe space, and mulitplied.     My BIL trapped and released more than 10.

We have recently been invaded by mice in the attic.  I was hearing strange noises, so my husband set traps.  The mice avoided the live traps, unfortunately, so we had to use the others....and caught 5!
