Season of Lent
« on: Feb 8th, 2005, 7:02pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Today marks the beginning of the Lenten Season as we celebrate Ash Wednesday when we have ash put on our forehead as a reminder that we all came and will return to dust.

this also marks the beginning of the fasting and abstinence for us Christian until Easter Sunday, as we follow Christ's way to the cross and His resurrection..

CHOCOLATE, perhaps Huh Roll Eyes

I do not observe this time, but maybe I should, for I'm trying to give up all "WHITE" foods!

OK, I've decided, I'm observing Lent!  For 40 days I can give up the white foods{pastries, breads, sugars], maybe I'll be 40 lbs slimmer Wink

As always I will try to use Lent as a time of personal discipline and a time for reflection.

Here's what our minister said in his email this week:

Quote:
The ashes are a sign: In life we have many failures, and life ends too soon, "earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust."  Ashes on our foreheads - what a strange dark thing - but the reminder helps us to be aware that we need forgiveness, we need God, we need the loving example of Jesus.  Let the ashes seal your commitment to observe Lent with the discipline you have chosen.  Are you giving up chocolate or making a point of praying every day?  What will be difficult enough that doing it will remind you that "with God all things are possible"?

Lent is a Catholic/Espiscopal belief, right?  Are all of you Catholic?

I am Catholic. However, we do not observe Lenten season much. My family attend important masses and all, but we really do not cut back on anything. However, we always not eat meat on Fridays all year long, if we can help it.

I'm not Catholic, but I've always chosen to observe Lent. I use it as a time to bring myself closer to God. So I end up giving up something (ususally coffee, but this year I gave that up because of the two babies in my belly), and use the time I would usually spend doing that particular thing to read my Bible or just spend some time in prayer. I have found it very relaxing, and usually near the end, I do not even miss whatever it was I gave up!

I don't know what to give up this year because I'm not sure what two children will make me give up yet! I'll find out soon enough!  Cool

All of my ancestors on Dad's side of the family are/were Catholic.  My hometown was the only city in the county that has a Catholic Church.  Every Friday the cafeteria served fish.  So, on Fridays, I guess I was Catholic, either fish or starve at lunch!
P.S. I love fish Cool

Yesterday (Friday), was fish day for us. But I ate the left over spaghetti and pizza for breakfast, and didn't realize it was Friday until I'm half done!  Embarassed
