ATTN: Nerds - Advice please!

Our area is finally getting high speed internet.  I should be getting DSL next week.   What I need to know is your recommendations for a firewall.  Which is the best/easiest  to use.....nothing complicated, please.   I think Rhune advises using a router + a firewall.    Anyone else have some advice for me?

I use Zone Alarm and have never had any problems with it.  It's simple to use, is free and they update regularly.  It doesn't have any conflicts with my virus software or spyware software.

I defintely recommend a router, it will make it much much harder for hackers to get into your machine as well as protect you from any "worm" type computer viruses.

My dad also uses Zone Alarm and a router on all of our computers. But it's also good to have AVG for anti virus and Ad Aware for spyware removal.

I have used Zone Alarm, and then I switched to Sygate Personnal Firewall, which is also free. Sygate is a bit mor complicated to figure out though. I will switch back to Zona Alarm soon.

I want to buy a router since I am on cable, I just dont know which one I need.  Embarassed

Any little router will do, you don't need anything powerful unless you are trying to connect a large network of computers together. There are sevearal brands of little 4 line routers (allows you to connect up to 4 computers together on your internet connection) that are pretty dang cheap anymore (under $50 in the US) that would be just fine.  I think a 4 line router is about the smallest they sell, don't worry if you've only got one computer and don't use all the lines.  Routers were invented to connect computers together, but along they way they inadvertently provided virus & hacking protection too, so they are a smart buy whether you are connecting computers together or not.

Absolutely, a firewall is good, but it doesn't substitute a virus scanner.  They should be used together.  One catches some things and the other catches others.  If you want your computer to be a fortress you need 4 things, a router, a virus scanner, a firewall and a spyware scanner.

UGG!  I'm sorry, but I'm no help with computers, I just use the laptop they gave all the teachers at the begining of the year for grading things, or use my home computer.

Duh   I recently bought Norton AntiVirus 2005, and it has spyware protection.  Is that enough?  I want to be ready when it's officially on, but keep worrying that something isn't going to work.....especially since I'll be playing with the phone jack myself, to disconnect the dedicated line.  The rep told me they will send me the "modem" (I know it's called something else, but ?) and line filters for the phone jacks.  The computer has a ethernet port built in.   Am I forgetting anything important?  DSL has a whole 'nuther set of problems from dial-up.

if the spyware is built into the virus scanner, that's probably just fine.  I personally use spybot search and destroy, but I know lots of people use that in combination with adaware, since they both seem to pick up different things.  Spyware is annoying, but not necessarily as dangerous as a virus.
