Any Teachers on This Board?
« on: Feb 11th, 2005, 10:10pm »

Are you a teacher?  If so, what grade(s) do you teach and what subject(s)?

I homeschool my fifth grader and seventh grader so I have to teach all the subjects.  This year, my favorite subject has been world history.  I also like to teach science and I abhor teaching math.

Not me, all I ever wanted to do for a career was raise my two children and be a stay at home MOM.  I loved picking them up from school Grin

Both our daughters have Master's Degrees In Education.
One teaches Jr High Language Arts and has been"Teacher of the Year 4 years.
She is awesome!

The other daughter is a stay at home Mom and volunteers each Wednesday
to read the books the School District is considering purchasing.
She is equally awsesome and finished college with a 4.3 GPA.

We are blessed to have these 4 smart children, who've turned out so successful, in life and careers.  We are so proud   Grin
I'll not brag on the sons tonight!   Later Wink

Cool, Luci!  I also have a Master's Degree.  Although I'm sure my dad probably thinks I'm wasting it by staying at home with the kids, I beg to differ.  I think it has prepared me even more for the task at hand.

Go ahead and brag on those kids of yours, Luci!  You're a proud mama!  Grin

Yes!  Now I remember reading that a while back.  Smiley  Do you enjoy it, Jenna?  What facet of English do you teach and what does my now-7th grader have to look forward to in 9th grade English?  Do I need to be afraid?  :laff:

Do any of your reading books start a sentence with; "Me and ................", Jenna?
I've noticed you started sentences structured this way and that was a definite "NO NO" from the way we and our children were taught in School & College!

Mu daughter is such a creative writer, I tried to encourage her to start writing children's books.  However, she is very busy with three children and their activities.
Maybe some day!

Years ago I took a creative writing course, along with many courses.  It has always been an area of interest to me.  There are so many courses I've taken in Sales/Marketing & could have finished a BA Degree in 18 months.  That's well and good, but hopefully I won't be contemplating a new career.  If so, then I'll finish!

My family is very creative in so many areas, writing, home decorating, fashion sewing, architects, cosmeticians,  teachers, musicians, dancers.  Writing this down makes me see we're a creative bunch, not deadbeats!  Way to go family Wink

Now "Mr L and I" are going to visit my Mom  Cool

How are you liking your English classes this year Heather?

Grammar is a BIGGIE with me, Luci.  I think misuse is a hot button with me because of this area of the country where our language gets slaughtered without a thought.  Many of the teachers let it slide, too.  The middle school right around the corner from us got a schoolwide "F" in reading/language arts.  If that's not a huge red flag, then what is?

I'm also big on proofreading because I'm not perfect.  Everyone makes mistakes when they write but those mistakes are easily correctable--especially in this computer age.  If English is your first language, you ought to be able to spell reasonably well and use correct grammar and syntax when you right, assuming you have at least a middle school education.

Now then, enuf uv this here sopebox.  Don't nobody ask me about them pie thangies in math or about long deevishun!

So true Rupey, sentence structure and grammar is a "shur far" tip off on how much education a person has, if any!

Mine isn't always perfect and sometimes I do it on here for fun.  It easy to correct on this website, but I'm not even a good proofreader Lips Sealed

Heather, I've really enjoyed social studies with my kids.  I'm loving teaching world history this year, though, because I didn't pay attention to it when I was in high school...except for my world war classes.  (See below.)
:dunce:

I pretty much enjoyed all of my English classes in high school.  I was always in the advanced English classes and was always in the remedial math classes!
:dunce: :dunce:

The best class I had in high school was a WWI and WWII class.  The teacher had a dry sense of humor and had very innovative ways of teaching that really held our interests.  To help us review for a test, he'd play Jeopardy with the whole class.  Everyone had to participate and each row was a team.

Might I add that grammar is a biggee with me too.

However, boards are a place to unwind and be ourselves and not have to worry about every punctuation mark and correct verbage.  So what if someone makes a mistake here and there?  We don't hold English tests around here.   Cheesy

No we don't, thankfully!  However, when a person continually used the same sentence structure one does get suspicious this is the way they talk all of the time.   It matters NOT to me, but then don't try to be who you/they aren't!
........know what I mean Roll Eyes Huh
