This is just so priceless...and so easy to see happening
customer service being what it is!
 
My Aunt died this past January.
Citi Bank billed her for February and March
for their monthly service charge on her credit card, and then added
late fees and interest on the monthly charge...
the balance had been $0.00..
now was somewhere around $60.00
I placed the following phone call to CitiBank:
 
Me:
"I am calling to tell you that
she died in January."
 
CitiBank:
"The account was never closed
and the late fees and charges still apply."
 
Me:
"Maybe, you should turn it over to collections"
 
CitiBank:
"Since it is 2 months past due,
it already has been."
 
Me:
"So, what will they do when
they find out she is dead?"
 
CitiBank:
"Either report her account to the frauds division,
or report her to the credit bureau...
maybe both!"
 
Me:
"Do you think God will be mad at her?"
 
CitiBank:
"...excuse me?"
 
Me:
"Did you just get what I was telling you...
the part about her being dead?"
 
CitiBank:
"Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor!"
(Supervisor gets on the phone)
 
Me:
"I'm calling to tell you, she died in January."
 
CitiBank:
"The account was never closed and
the late fees and charges still apply."
 
Me:
"You mean you want to
collect from her estate?"
 
CitiBank:
..(stammer)...
"Are you her lawyer?"
 
Me:
"No, I'm! her great nephew."
(Lawyer info given)
 
CitiBank:
"Could you fax us a certificate of death?"
 
Me:
"Sure."
(Fax number is given)
(After they get the fax)
 
CitiBank:
"Our system just isn't setup for death"
 
Me:
"Oh..."
 
CitiBank:
"I don't know what more I can do to help"
 
Me:
"Well...if you figure it out, great!
If not, you could just keep billing her...
I suppose...
don't really think she will care!"
 
CitiBank:
"Well... the late fees and charges do still apply."
 
Me:
"Would you like her new billing address?"
 
CitiBank:
"That might help."
 
Me:
"Odessa Memorial Cemetery, Hwy 129
and plot number given."
 
CitiBank:
"Sir, that's a cemetery!"
 
Me:
"What do you do with
dead people on YOUR planet?!!"
 
Citi Bank Hung Up!!!~*~

Which brings up the bill we've been getting from our cellular company.  When my Mom went to live in the nursing facility, I gave her my cell phone and we bought another one for me.  We're all on the "Family Plan"! Roll Eyes [does the eye roll clue you this story gets better?]  
#1The numbers are small and she can't read them.
#2 She is permanent there now and we put in a phone with.........BIG numbers she can see well.
 
Four months passed and we decided to cancel the third cell phone.  They told us we can't without a $175.00 cancellation fee.  We went back and forth about this issue with them and after 3 or 4 phone calls, talking with a different person each time we've decided to keeep it until the year is up, which will be in April.  
You would think the problem is solved, right?   NO!
I faxed the papers they asked for to PROVE that my 84 yr old Mother is in a nursing facility!
We received not one, but two contracts in the mail this weekend that states if we do not renew this same phone with a TWO [2] year contract we will be charged the $175.00 fee they were going to charge us for the early cancellation!
 
Something is wrong with this picture, agree?
 
Today I will call this phone company, AGAIN, and explain to them AGAIN.  Mr L is furious, yesterday I thought he was going to start throwing his crutches, but instead he had a beer with the neighbor.
This issue will be resolved about the third cell phone we do not need and cannnot use, or we will cancel the other two and go withanother company.
 
We're to the point of so what;  
Threaten us with reporting it to the credit company!  
We have more credit available than we want to or do use!
The line forms to the right buddy!
 
I'll try one more time to resolve this, but the $175,  
NOT going to happen out of our pocket of coins!
What would you do?
 
OK, didn't mean to sabotage your thread but this sort of thing is ongoing with the elderly, dead or alive.
As I told the woman at the phone company; if you made a phone with big numbers we would keep the account!

I'm not well-versed on major credit card policies but I have worked for a major department store.  When you sign up for this store's credit card, you can also, for a small fee on each statement, sign up for a plan that will erase your entire bill should disability or death of the cardholder occur.

I4S - The conversation sounds funny, but I know it had to be VERY frustrating!  I had a similar experience w/ a credit card company following a death.  
 
I also gave them the cemetary address, and told them if they ever do get in touch w/ him, to tell him to contact me too because I have a few things to say to him as well.  Needless to say, I never heard from them again!

Well, I'm glad that wasn't a personal story, I4S.  It can be viewed as a hilarious discourse, to be sure.  But I've got to say, it can also be a very frustrating exchange.
 
I had creditors calling me constantly the first few months.  Finally, I gave 'em his cemetary address info, told them they had my persmission to dig him up and check his pockets.  They were welcome to any change they found in there.  Other than that, the well was dry.
 
Sometimes you have to give creditors a little "shock and awe" before they get the hint!  Bluntness did work in my case.

REading this thread reminds me of just after my Dad passed in 1983.  Months down the road as my Mom went through each piece of paper to make sure she'd never missed anything, she got very frustrated and this is what she said!  
 
"Today I'd like to dig him up and kick his arse"!
Keep in mind my Mother was ONLY 62 when my Dad passed forma 7 year illness with cancer.
 
Even though we all had been so sad, this was funny and broke the ice and we all laughed till tears rolled!
 
Widows do get very frustrated after the head of the house passes  Cry
