Diet and Exercise

Well, it's that time of year.  DH and I gained weight this winter, and we need to start thinking of a change.   Winter has been more confining than usual in SE Texas....more cold and wet, less activity, more cooking of comfort foods, and snacking.  Change will come naturally, with a change of seasons, but it's not coming soon enough.

We've got around to talking about diets and changing our activity level.  What diets do you favor and have had good luck with?

I no longer want to do hunger, or deprive myself of whole food groups.  I think it guarantees I won't stick to a diet.   The Mediterranean diet has come up as a good one to control cholesterol and lose weight.  I'm willing to try it but I need a good book with a plan and recipes.   I will have to plan a trip to the "big city" so we can browse a book store.   Anyone have any recommendations?

set up a defined exercise time (maybe with someone in your neighbourhood) that both you and your husband exercise together.

Talk about meal choices together.

I don't have any magic solutions.  If I did I wouldn't be so overweight sigh.

WALK, if you want to loose weight and feel better, WALK.
Just as you two, we've been rather confined this winter and also have gained some more lbs Roll Eyes.  I've walked before and lost it, so this is my plan again.
Eating in moderation is also the key to better health.
We do have a threadmill, so I'll be walking on it some, but it isn't like getting out and walking, which I love to do!

I have two diabetic cookbooks I had purchased for my Mom, which she never cracked.  While reading them I've learned that if we all eat a diabetic type of diet we will have better health.

Good Luck Cool  Let's keep this thread at the top and check in with each other frequently.

I was on the Atkins diet for 7 mos last year and lost a lot of weight, however it raised m y cholseterol way too much so my doctor told me to go on the Mediterranean diet and I did. There is a lot of info online, it doesn't require a book to follow. I'm not losing a lot of weight on this diet and I had a hard time adjusting to carbs again but I am still making slow but steady progress and lowering my cholseterol again. March 1st was the 1 year diet mark and I was down 65 lbs. I still have a little more to go, but walking seems to be the key weight loss plan for me, and I also try to walk 5 miles per day on the treadmill. I basically try to stay away from meats and anything with cholesterol in it and concentrate on whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits and some soy products.

Diets are difficult.  I do believe moderation is the key.  Leave off as much "white foods" as possible.  Now that I have to watch my diet in terms of grains, dut to this painful Diverticulitis, it's eve more difficult.  If any food has a lot of grains or seeds in it, I have to pick it out or pass it up!  I'll get there!

Seaglass, I am jealous, but I'm so happy and thrilled for you.
Hopefully this will be a better year for me, health wise!   You keep going, girl Cool

I joined Weight Watchers online (and I don't have to go to meetings) in January.  They have two plans: the kind where you measure everything and all foods have point values that you have to keep track of and then another plan where you just eat what is on the food lists and you don't have to measure the portions or count the points.  You just eat until you are satisfied.  The latter of the two is the plan that I'm following--it's called "Core"--and I absolutely love it.  I can see myself eating like this for the rest of my life.  I can't say I've felt that way about any other diet I've tried.

I started January 14th and as of today, I've lost 22 pounds.

Wow! Great weight loss in a short time, Rupey.  I never lose that fast, but it sounds promising.  Give us a few details on the diet, please.

Well there is dieting in my house right now.  I dont do to well with diets but my b/f has so much will power it drives me nuts.  He has a bodybuilding contest in June so he has lowered his carbs alot.  He eats mostly protein, eggs, tuna and chicken and some veggies.  I do about the same diet except I eat veggies with every meal and I eat junk as well (shhhh).  This diet really works for him, last yr he dropped 47 lbs in 3 mths.  It is a really hard diet to follow tho.  And he also drinks 8 leters of water a day.  THis is my first attempt at this diet but my first week I dropped 2 pounds.  He go's to the gym daily and I power walk 3 to 4 times a week.  I want to drop 10 lbs before I go to Porta Platta in May.  I use to be 95 lbs and Im now 115.  I dont want to go back to 95 I just didnt look healthy but I think I can drop 10lbs and be 105.  I hope I can do it!!!

Of course, I can't give explicit details because of my agreement with W.W. when I joined but I can tell you that the Core Plan has lists of foods from all major food groups.

The foods you are allowed to eat are in their purest forms--not highly processed or with added sugar.  The recipes are delicious.  I think the fact that I've cut sugar out of my diet has helped greatly in reducing and nearly eliminating my craving to overeat or to eat the wrong kind of foods.

I can have unlimited veggies, fruits, oatmeal, fat-free milk and yogurt, and 94% fat free popcorn.  There are limitations on how much bread and potatoes you can have daily so I hardly ever eat bread.  Still, the diet is do-able in real life situations.  For those occasions when I eat out or at someone's house, I can use extra points each week.  With these points, I've enjoyed tortilla chips, pizza, dessert, and biscuits.   Of course, I do everything in moderation.  I only have to measure and journal those foods that aren't on the food lists so that I can stay within the permissible limits.

I hope that information helps, Pocket.  There is a message board at the W.W. site and those ladies who are on Core love the program.  I feel like I'm losing weight at a steady, healthy pace.  I have a very long way to go, but I'm already needing smaller clothing sizes!

BTW, by joining W.W. online, I was able to save a lot of money.  Attending actual meetings costs more money.  Personally, I never liked going to meetings the other times in the past that I've tried W.W.  The Core Program is new and I really, really like it.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do.

I meant to say that there is far more I'm allowed to have but since I'm a vegetarian, the meat list doesn't apply to me at all.  There are other dairy products allowed as well, but I'm sort of lactose intolerant.

There is a LOT of food that is permissible and a wide variety, at that.

Thanks for the info, Rupey.  I'll go to the website and check it out for myself.   The reason I was considering the Mediterranean diet in the first place was I wanted one diet to address my DH's cholesterol problem and our weight.  I'm sure the WW is a good diet...problem is, will it satisfy my DH.  I guess we could try one and if it doesn't work or satisfy us, go to another.  What we don't want to do is yo-yo.
