to good to be true!

just a few short minutes ago whilst sitting here at my computer i recieved an email from some travel company in the USA claiming I had won a prize and I should contact them immediately.

A toll free number was given for callers outside of the US so i thought "what the heck, I'll check it out"

so I called, gave the reference number that was emailed to me and confirmed my name.

i was talking to a lovely lady named sherlinds and I was told that i had won a 19 day vacation which included.....7 days and 6 nights in Orlando, 2day and 2 night cruise to the Bahamas, 5 days and 4 nights to fort laurderdale and 5 days and 4 nights in Peurto Viallta ( or something) in Mexico. Also included was 7 day car hire, all meals and accomodation. All I had to pay for was my airfares and taxes.....the trip was for 4 people.

I started to get excited....they told me I had 18 months to travel and just needed to make my booking at least 45 days in advance. I was told they were going to courier all my reservation papers, tickets etc within 14 days. I was told that it was promotion to get more people visiting resorts and the like. I was then told it wasn't all free that I would have to pay $998 us as the promoter was covering 70% of the cost....I still thought that was ok......$998 for 19 days in Florida for 4 people.......I was ok with that and started thinking when we could book our trip........I thought seeing as though we had 18 months there was no rush to plan and it would give us more time to save more money for spending!!!

Then I was put on the phone to a "Reservation Consultant" his name was Paul and we had  a chat about Australia for a while.....then came the catch....."And how will you be paying for that today Rebecca?"

"Excuse me.......pay for it today?"

paul then said" oh yes you must cover the $998 today"

"no I wont be......I'm not parting with $1300 australian dollars on my Visa card today for a trip I wont be taking for at least 12 months.....I'm sorry Paul as good as it sounds I'm just not going to pay today"

with that paul replied......" well you've just wasted our time and money as WE'RE the ones paying for this call"

He then hung up on me!

How rude! Oh well I've just learnt not to trust these email giveaways!

We've had the same experiences and you were so right in refusing it!  First of all you cannot take the trips all at the same time.  You go there, HAVE to sit in on a timeshare boring meeting and then they give you the certificate to board the ship, and vouchers for other trips.  So it would be back to Australia for you and making plans for more flights to the good ole USA.

We have friends that clued us on this[what we call a scam] great offer Roll Eyes

After all, THEY sent you the email letter, the very nerve Shocked
Those people thrive on intimidation!  He thought you would give in and book it!
Tell them you read the book also Wink

I wouldn't pay a company that I just gotten to know. What if after you pay them they run off? There's no way in tracing them, and they could just be scammers posing as a Travel Company!

Also, if they found out about your email address without you giving it to them, then it would be spamming. Tell them that!

yea I thought it was a bit fishy when they asked for payment today.. They'd then have my credit card details and my personal information.

As a rule I never ever pay for anything by credit card over the net or phone!

Live and learn.  If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.   We learned long ago, that free and extremely low offers wind up costing the consumer lots of money.   There are way too many ways to cheat people out of their hard earned cash.

So true Pocket.  We were called years ago and wouldn't pay them that night.  Then took each trip and narrowed it down to what the same trips would cost they were offering.
Definitely they are making money ofof you.  Then you have to sit through the boring timeshare presentation.  This may be for some folks, but we've never seen the value of it at all.

You were very bright not to pay for that bec. As you said, they now would have all your information, and you would have nothing in return. (you didnt think they would really send the papers and stuff eh ? Wink

Don't argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and then they beat you up with experience.
