Sadly over the past two months here in Australia we have seen an increase in animal cruelty cases. All have involved kittens no older than 10 weeks of age.

One 8 week old kitten was continually run over by three youths aged between 15 and 18 by their bikes. A police officer resuced the kitten and arrested the boys. They have yet to face court. The officer who rescued the Kitten has asked if he may take it home once it's fully recovered.

Another...a 9 week old kitten was bashed and run over sadly he didn't survive.

But the one that really makes my blood boil......a 10 week old kitten was doused with fuel and set alight....he survived for a few days but sadly died recently. The youth who committed this horrific act was charged and went to court......he was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment....however he appealed his case and yesterday the district court overturned the ruling and sentenced him to 100 hours community service!!!

The public are outraged......don't these judges realise that this behaviour in many cases leads to serial killing and rapists.

In studies of mass murderers and serial killers torture of animals was something that most of them did during their younger years!!!

But it's not what these youths could end up doing that irritates me........these poor little animals are tortured, made to suffer and in many cases die a slow painful death or are maimed for life and yet our legal system doesn't seem to care.

Yes there are laws and harsh penalities for this crime however I have yet to hear of one judge willing to pass down a punishment that fits the crime.....not one judge has been prepared to give the maximum sentence sentence for this crime.

So to this judge who overruled the original sentence....in years to come when that same youth is in front of you again but this time for killing a child......you should serve the life sentence right along with him as you will be as guilty!

What are the laws like in your country regarding animal cruelty? What do you think should happen to people who commit this crime?

We read about animal cruelty cases all the time, and are sickened by them. Not long ago, the local TV station had run a series on the subject, and had film of teens torturing animals.......AND SHOWED IT! :huh2:

I think anyone guilty of animal cruelty should be given the maximum penalty so this kind of thing is shown to have consequences.

You're absolutely right that this is preliminary behaviour to rape and/or murder. The people who do this sort of thing are young sociopaths that do not feel remorse for their actions and instead are excited by it. It gives them a sense of power, and they will crave that feeling again and continually escallate it in small ways until it reaches the point where they are hurting people. There are great advances in therapy for these people if they are still children, but once they hit puberty, it's unlikely you'll be able to "fix" them. Not all go on to kill, but many will.

BL, animal lovers everywhere are sickened by this kind of thing. I almost threw up when I saw that piece on the news, (and every time I hear of other abuse) and haven't been able to erase it from my mind. Still, not seeing something doesn't mean it doesn't happen, and we need to be aware and contribute to it's prevention.
