This Day In April Is A Happy Day!

As most of you know, last year in March,  I had no choice but to place my Mom in a Nursing Center.

She is doing extremely well and has to stay on the proper diet for a diabetic and take her meds as directed.   This has done wonders for her.  Her memory is still a problem as the short term won't she probably won't remember  tomorrow what she did today most of the time.

My Mom was the middle child of 11 children.  Her Dad left all of them  when she was 11 yrs old.  Five Brothers and five sisters.  Times were difficult.  She and my Dad ran off and eloped when she was 15 and he 18.  Thankfully I did not come along for 4 more years!

My Mom has been a hard worker and helped any and all of her siblings when she could with the things she knew to do well.  Like Cooking all weekend when any of them would come visit.  Helping them to sew their clothes.  Staying with them when any of the sisters had surgery, babies or just the flu.  Staying with their Mother all weekend when she had completed working outside the home 5 days herself and keeping her own house.

Now my Mom has been in the Nursing Center for just over a year and until today, none of her brothers (two are still living) or sisters (three are still alive).
............... the three sisters came to visit with her today.  The Daughter of one of them drove all of them.

When I got there this afternoon, she immediately told me she had 4 visitors today and who they were, except she thought the cousin that drove was her younger sister/Mom's niece!
That's Ok!  She was so excited they came to see her.  she told me she saw two of them and saw the four and almost cried, but thought if she cried, so would they!

Well, I cried!  Last week I was talking to the younger sister of the cousin who visited.  I told her that for all my Mom has done for all the family when and as she could, they should be ashamed to not have visited her for this length of time.

I was to the point of whatever it too I would do to wake them up and make them see they need to visit her.
 She needs them also!

My husband has tried to console me as I've cried over them not visiting with her.  I told my husband and two children last week that if they don't get with it and visit their oldest living sister, when she passes they all can stay home like they've been doing!

This family has been so close in the past.  I know it hurts them to see her and know that she isn't the active vibrant woman from the past, but Christian duty and Family ties are another thing and should not be shoved under the rug, or her ignored.  A phone call is great but doesn't have the impact of seeing a loved one face to face!

OK, as I've never expressed this here before for I was so hurt and ashamed of my family.   At least I can now say, "they came through" and visited with her.

Hopefully they won't stay away so long!  She told me they loved where she lives, and one of them wanted the bed in the room with her.

I guess they had no faith,  and thought I would put my Mom in a crappy run down place where she wouldn't get the best of care.    They knew better!

At least this day ended on a very good
note and my Mom is happy!  So am I  Grin   Cool

I'm glad they showed up, even if you had to shame them into it.    People get stuck in their own ruts, and just don't realize how time is going and once it's gone, they can't get it back.

I made up my mind a few weeks ago that I would do whatever it takes to get them out of the rut to visit her.  They had it in their minds a Nursing Center would be this horrible place their sister was put in by her spoiled daughter!  Like theirs aren't   Roll Eyes
I do know them well!  Undecided  ....but I love them also  Wink

They find this new nice, clean, fragrant place where their sister lives, who had just a bath, her neat, well decorated room,  with all the amenities of home.

My next move was going to be to send them a  brochure and the picture taken of her at a table when they had a
"Putting On The Ritz" Dinner.   Mom looked very pretty in her purple pant suit, and was sitting at the table alone for the picture.  My caption would be " What's Missing In This Picture"?
Answer: YOU
Then enclose it in the envelope with the brochure.  Now I'll work on the two brothers.  I've already called some of my other female cousins.  We'll see who visit next?

Elderly people in a nursing facility are so anxious for anyone coming and going to just say" hello" to them.  We speak and talk to every one of them in the Lobby or Dining Hall when we're there.    I go at least 5 times a week.  That's why I'm so happy she's only 4 miles from our home!

We never know what lies ahead for any of us.  At the other place, before we moved her here 6 weeks ago, there were patients of all ages.  A 27 yr old young man who had an auto accident,(he will never walk again), several under the age of 50 yrs.  For a good wake up call, visit a Nursing Center.
You'll wake up quick!

We've told the ADM. if they ever need us for any Volunteer work, all they have to do is call and we'll be there to help.
