LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - It's a rule: Giant simians are drawn to fair-haired women.

1933's "King Kong" starring Fay Wray, the 1976 remake starring Jessica Lange and even 1998's "Mighty Joe Young" starring Charlize Theron follow the formula. Now, Naomi Watts will join the elite cadre of flaxen-locked beauties and their gargantuan beasts.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson has offered the Australian actress the coveted role of Ann Darrow, an American actress who makes a living performing in Broadway song and dance shows in Depression-era New York, in his remake of "King Kong."

Although no deal is in place yet, Jackson and Watts met in London in late August for a "meeting among friends," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jackson, director of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is still in the process of completing the final installment, which will hit theaters Dec. 17. He is expected to begin writing "King Kong" in November and plans to shoot next summer.

Watts, a cohort of fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, made her film breakthrough in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive." Since then, she has starred in "The Ring" and will next appear in Focus Features' "21 Grams," which is scheduled to be released Nov. 14.
