Ian McKellen to Receive UK Personality Award Wed, Sep 24, 2003, 09:09 AM PT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The British Independent Film Awards will bestow the Variety UK Personality award to actor Ian McKellen for his contribution to the British film industry. McKellen recently has made his mark internationally as the wizard Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" movies. The actor has garnered two Oscar nominations for his performance in the first installment of the "Rings" trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring," and for his 1998 dramatic turn in "Gods and Monsters." The BIFA will also name the year's best film from nominees that include "28 Days Later," "Buffalo Soldiers," "The Magdalene Sisters," "Young Adam" and "Dirty Pretty Things," which garnered a total of seven nominations, reports the AP. The sixth annual awards will take place in London on Nov. 4. McKellen, who was knighted in 1990, will reprise the role of Gandalf for the last time in "The Return of the King," the final part of the "Rings" series, which opens Dec. 17.
