LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - It's a tight race for best foreign language film this year at the Oscars.

Academy President Frank Pierson announced today that a record-breaking 55 countries have submitted films to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration in the category.

It is the largest number of films ever entered in this category, besting last year's record by one film.

One of the top contenders is Afghani director Siddiq Barmak's "Osama," which recently won the top prize at the International Festival of New Film and Media in Montreal on Sunday (Oct. 19). "Osama" is one of the first features produced in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban almost two years ago.

Some of the other competitors include: Brazil's "Canrandiru" by Hector Babenco, Jean-Paul Rappeneau's "Bon Voyage" for France, Hong Kong's "Infernal Affairs" by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, "The Return" by Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev and Venezuela's "Sangrador" by Leonardo Henriquez.

The 76th Academy Award nominations will be announced at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Tuesday, January 27, 2004.

The awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Billy Crystal, will air live on Feb. 29 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
