DiCaprio Film Threatened by California Fires Tue, Oct 28, 2003, 09:10 AM PT By Holly Aguirre LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The massive wildfires that have raged through parts of California since last week have finally touched the Hollywood film industry. The fires destroyed a ranch in the Simi Valley area, which was intended for airstrip scenes in Leonardo DiCaprio's newest film, "The Aviator." DiCaprio stars in the Martin Scorsese-directed film as the legendary pilot and businessman Howard Hughes. Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale and singer Gwen Stefani will portray actresses Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner and Jean Harlow, respectively. "Aviator" producers provided the following statement: This is just a minor inconvenience compared to what the victims of this devastating fire are going through. Filming of the airstrip scenes have consequently been moved to an indoor location. Although the fires only proved to be minor inconvenience to the film, they have claimed 15 lives and destroyed more than 1,100 homes in California already. Nearby film and TV shows "Carnivale," "CSI" and "Deadwood" have been unaffected so far, but are on full alert for the threat of fire. "Aviator," which marks the reunion of DiCaprio and Scorsese who worked together previously on "Gangs of New York," is scheduled for release in December 2004.
