'Harry Potter' Seeks Date to the Dance
Fri, Dec 19, 2003, 11:12 AM PT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Harry Potter needs to lay off the butterbeer because he's about to see double.

As if fighting off the forces of evil wasn't enough, now the boy wizard has to deal with the fairer sex -- specifically a set of twins.

Filmmakers for "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" are seeking two teenage girls to portray twin sisters Parvati and Padma, fellow Hogwarts students, according to British news sources.

Auditions for the girls, who don't need any previous acting experience, will be held at London's Pineapple Studios on Saturday, Dec. 20.

The film's casting office has had to relax its criteria for the search.

"In this book, they are actually written as twins but it has been incredibly difficult to find Asian twin girls," says casting director Shaheen Baig. "So we decided to open it up and just find two girls. If they happen to be sisters that would be amazing ... [but we] just want two good girls who have fantastic chemistry."

In "Goblet," Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger turn 14 and begin to demonstrate an interest in the opposite sex. Parvati and Padma are Harry and Ron's dates to the ball.

The film is the fourth installment of the series based on the wildly popular children's books by J.K. Rowling. The third film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," will have a super-wide release on Friday, June 4.

I don't recall Parvati and Padma ever being described as Asian in the books.  His big crush Cho Chang was asian, but I recently reread these and I don't recall the twins ever being described as Asian, and in one book (the 5th I think) he comments on the red highlights in Parvati's hair when he's sitting behind her during a test.

Perhaps they combined Cho Chang with Parvati and Padma for the purposes of the screen-play.

hrmm, that would certainly not make any sense.  Cho Chang was the girl he wanted to go to the dance with and has the big crush on.  Important to the plot later on is the fact that she goes with Cedric Diggory to the dance instead of Harry, and Harry and Ron end up with Parvati and Padma instead.  I can't see how they would combine them for plot purposes without really screwing up the plot of the 5th book.

Yes but they keep taking these movies more and more off the track of the books for instance PoA will not even have Quidditch as a part of the movie. Which is how he meets both Cho and Cedric. The world cup from all accounts is being removed from GoF and the Tri-Wizard tournament is being shortened considerably. I'm holding my opinion until I actually see Azkaban but if they do to it what I've heard I may boycott the rest of the movies. goto www.mugglenet.com if you want to know more.

Now, I don't necessarily see them removing the quididch part of the 3rd movie a bad thing. I realize it's a big part of the books, but there is more I would rather have them focus on with the 3rd book.  There's no reason that harry can't see cho or cedric and comment as if it were after the game and still have those key points in the film, without actually having a quiddich match played.  I'll check out the website just the same, but in general I'm someone who it's ok with if a film deviates from following a book to the letter.  I don't see how they could replace cho with padma for the entire series, that wouldn't be a minor deviation or simply skipping stuff that really can be skipped.

I agree that minor changes are ok but this franchise is getting mor and more away from the books with each passing movie. Next they'll be telling us Harry is a pureblood or something idiotic like that. Getting rid of Voldemort and making Dumbledore the bad guy. You know idiocy.

Nah they'll never take it that far.  The Lord of the Rings films are at this point incredibly far from the books, but the intent of the story and the overall story is still the same and still good.  It's hard to make a book as large, and bear in mind each volume gets larger, into a 3 hour film and keep everything they'd like to keep.  At some points they have to decide what they are gonna throw out entirely and what they are going to summarize in order to make it fit into that 3 hours.  Remember, Rowlings still has a say in the final cut, etc. and certainly isn't going to approve of them making large alterations to the storyline, especially if it's damaging to the overall story.

I went to the website you recommended but didn't spot where you were talking about the 3rd movie.  There's a lot of content on that site, can you narrow down for me where you are discussing it?
