NAACP Bows to 'Beckham,' Rides 'Whale' Wagon Thu, Jan 08, 2004, 10:01 AM PT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The Brits and Kiwis are coming! British film "Bend It Like Beckham" and New Zealand's "Whale Rider" top the list of best picture nominees for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards. Stateside offerings "Bad Boys II," "Deliver Us From Eva" and "The Fighting Temptations" make showings as the more usual NAACP fare to round out the best picture nominations. The annual NAACP Image Awards honor ethnic performers in film, TV, music and literature. "Beckham" stars newcomer Parminder Nagra as a girl who breaks from her family's traditionalist Indian culture to become a footballer (or soccer player to us Yanks) and date an Irishman. "Whale" centers on the disappearing traditions of the Maori people in New Zealand. The film's star, adolescent Keisha Castle-Hughes, is also nominated in the outstanding actress category alongside Beyonce Knowles, Gabrielle Union, Halle Berry and Queen Latifah. Knowles' "Fighting Temptations" star Cuba Gooding, Jr. also earned a nomination, but this time for his lead role in "Radio." He competes against Hollywood heavyweights Denzel Washington, Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson and Will Smith. For a list of the full nominations, including those for TV, music and literature, visit The Official NAACP website.
