***spoilers in this review... please be warned***

Wow.  My first official review.  And I'm not going to hold back either.

This movie was pretty bad.

Here's the concept.  Evan (played by Ashton Kutcher) has these blackouts as a kid.  Usually when something bad happens, he blacks out and can't remember the juicy details.  Fast forward to his college years.  Evan hasn't had a blackout in 7 years, that is (of course) until he begins to read one of his journals from his childhood (an idea the shrink gave him to help cope).  Now Evan is transported to the past and to the memory of a girl he once loved.  He has to see her again, and when he sees her life is miserable he wants to help.  Too late.  After seeing him again and being reminded of the past she offs herself.  Now, he has to figure out a way to go back in the past and right the wrongs... to prevent her from dying.

I really wanted to give Kutcher a chance.  I wanted him to do well.  I mean c'mon... let's look at the guy's body of work here.  "Dude, Where's My Car?"  That just can't be the pinnacle of anyone's career!

But sadly, he and everyone else in the movie overacts.  The kid who plays him was a better actor.  Things that are supposed to be serious got belly laughs from the audience.  In one scene, Evan wakes up an amputee.  It's not meant to be humourous, but everyone's laughing at his reaction.  Now he has on his prostetic arms and the girl offers him a granola bar.  He goes to grab it and crushes it to pieces.  O.K.  Now even I am laughing.  Don't they usually screen these movies in advance?  Did the audience then not find this amusing?  There was no point at all to the granola bar scene -- I would have just taken it out.  I'll give him this much: Kutcher plays a great college student... very plausible.  As a crazy man?  He's kinda funny really.

The movie's concept was original enough, but in the end it fails miserably.  Weak acting and an even weaker script means "The Butterfly Effect" gets:

 Cool 1/2 clappers

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'My God, you're right! I never would've thought of that!'

I havent seen this film but will most likely rent it from netflix when it comes out but it does sound alot like story I read which was quite good but would take could writing directing and acting to pull off as a film

I have just seen this film yesterday.. it was just played here for the past 2 weeks.. not a big screener...

anyways.. i liked this film... though i think it has a heavy story that i felt sad with a heavy feeling in my chest hours after watching this... also, no one found his amputated stages funny... maybe because many Filipinos don't know Kutcher from the 70's show... Grin and the granola bar was maybe added to show how frustrated that made Kutcher's character.. coz i did feel frustrated for him..

maybe they had quite poor acting.. but indeed the child versions of kutcher and his girlfriend's brother did a very good acting...
