The categories that matter most...

Best Picture

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Lost in Translation
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

Surprises?  Well no "Last Samurai" (my favourite movie of the year) or "Cold Mountain" and the inclusion of "Seabiscuit" may be a little surprising for some.  Kicking myself for not seeing "Master" now.

Best Actor
Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Ben Kingsley, House of Sand and Fog
Jude Law, Cold Mountain
Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
Sean Penn, Mystic River

I'm sorry that Tom Cruise didn't get a nod... otherwise a good list.

Best Actress

Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider
Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give
Samantha Morton, In America
Charlize Theron, Monster
Naomi Watts, 21 Grams

Keaton was cute, but Best Actress?  Not a chance.  Keisha Castle-Huges was incredible in "Whale Rider".  Rent this movie!!!

Supporting Actor
Alec Baldwin, The Cooler
Benicio Del Toro, 21 Grams
Djimon Hounsou, In America
Tim Robbins, Mystic River
Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai

Heard that Baldwin was phenominal but Robbins should win hands down.  Sad that Albert Finney wasn't nominated for "Big Fish".

Supporting Actress

Shohreh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog
Patricia Clarkson, Pieces of April
Marcia Gay Harden, Mystic River
Holly Hunter, thirteen
Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain.

Haven't seen three of these but I'm pulling for Renee.

Director

Fernando Meirelles, City of God
Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Sofia Coppola, Lost in Translation
Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Clint Eastwood, Mystic River.

Wow.  Incredible talent.  Could be a toss up.

We should have a contest closer to the date.  Can I hold a contest?  Where would I put it?   Huh

I'm pulling for lord of the rings.  To date these have been largely snubbed and quite frankly they are some of the best films of our time.

I haven't seen one.

I can't believe that Tom Cruise didn't get an actor nod for "The Last Samurai"  and I'm even more upset that Sean Astin didn't get the supporting actor nod for "Lord of the Rings".  Actually I'm really quite angry right now.  Angry Stupid oscars.....*grumble*

Hi folks. The oscars are set to air Sunday, February 29th.

I think LOTR will be a big winner... It seems like the Academy was waiting until the 3rd intallment to give it real accolades.

... & now I'm excited because I think "Lost in Translation" will be returning to theaters in my area since it's been nominated too. I missed it the 1st time around because it only played for a few days when released.

 Right on Jetgurl.......

As the countdown to the 76th Annual Academy Awards begins--February 29 on ABC with Billy Crystal back as host--the third segment in the Jackson's fantasy trilogy is on a roll. Return of the King, a critical and fan fave, reaped four trophies at last weekend's Golden Globes and is the front-runner for Oscar glory.
