I thought Johnny was marvelous, but I suspect Bill will take home the gold.  The academy often rewards an actor for their body of work or the fact that they are older and haven't had one yet, or on flip side just take into consideration that another actor is younger and still has more chances to win one.  Depp will be starring in Pirates 2 shortly and will have another shot at an Oscar for the same character in a year or two and the academy may take that into consideration when they make their decison.

I saw Pirates and have never liked Depp but to my surprise he was GREAt I hope he wins but I must agree with Rhune on how voting is done

Johnny Depp is my longtime dream hottie ever since the "Platoon" & "Nightmare on Elm Street" days. He's developed into a really skilled & wonderful actor... & did I mention he's not back to look at? But this role seems too 'cartooney' to win him the Oscar. To watch him in other good performances check out "Dead Man", "Ed Wood" & "Donnie Brasco" to name a few.
 
I think Sean Penn will likely win even tho I hope Bill wins (& voted for in this poll).

I couldnt agree more we saw Pirates and thought Depp was GREAt and we normally dont care for his acting so this was a pleasant surprise. The cartoon style character is probably what will keep the Oscar from him although he played is character to perfection we feel. We didnt see any of the other films so we cant comment on them but Depp was truly great and this is comong form NON Depp fans so that says alot!

I would love to see Bill win.  Haven't even seen the movie but plan to this weekend.  I've just heard all the hype over Sean's performance.  So I'm picking him.  Sure hope I'm wrong. lol

Sean Penn did a great job with Mystic river, but he was  playing a character that seemed like not a far stretch for him. Tim Robbins was fantastic. He transformed himself with his skill & body language into the downtrodden defeated character of Dave. I've never seen him play this before. Great job.
 
I'm wondering (& I've posted this before) why Kevin Bacon was overlooked though.

In my opinion, Kevin's part was not that strong in "Mystic River."  I don't even remember how I voted in this poll, but would not be surprized if Sean didn't win it.  He had so many good parts over the years and didn't win.  We all know how Hollywood is about past movies and the Ocasr.
