Thompson Discusses Divine 'Harry Potter' Role
Thu, Feb 12, 2004, 10:02 AM PT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Emma Thompson has unique insight when it comes to her role in the upcoming "Harry Potter" film.

Based on the third in the best-selling children's series by J.K. Rowling, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" features Thompson as the newest addition to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry faculty. She plays Sibyl Trelawney, the ethereal and quirky professor of divination who is renowned for her somewhat questionable predictions.

"I decided that, since she was someone who saw into the future, she had to be someone who couldn't see anything at all in the present," Thompson tells Empire Online. "Like where she was going, her clothing, anything."

Potter purists who decry any cinematic deviation from the text can rest easy though. Thompson doesn't play fast and loose with the original material, even though she does have experience adapting literature for the screen. In 1996, the 44-year-old actress won the best adapted screenplay Oscar for "Sense and Sensibility."

She did, however, offer one suggestion, which was welcomed by the film's staff.

"I decided to dress her slightly differently, and had wonderful cooperation from my director and designer and everything," she explains.

Thompson recently announced that she would write and star in another children's film "Nanny McPhee," based on the popular "Nurse Matilda" series by Christianna Brand.

"Azkaban" stars a litany of other British actors, including "Potter" franchise vets Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane and Alan Rickman along with newbies Gary Oldman, David Thewlis and Michael Gambon. The film is scheduled for a super-wide release on Friday, June 4.

Yes, he's actually the man who played dumbledore in a lot of the second movie.  He was Harris' understudy/physical double that they used for any shots where the face wasn't shown or wasn't shown clearly and then had Harris do voice overs for the speech, because he was so ill most of the time they were filming.  Michael Gambon is his name and here's his bio at IMDB

If you haven't seen the trailer for movie 3 yet, you can view it here:

He was someone they considered and I'm not sure if they approached him or not.  The impression I got from a McKellen interview was that he had already played a great literary wizard and didn't want to invite too much comparison between the two.
