"Lost in Translation" .......is it ever!  Roll Eyes   We just finished watching this movie, that is, when we didn't fall asleep out of boredom!  Talk about a non interesting movie, WOW.

Bill Murray for Best Actor, we just don't see  Shocked a win, but we've been wrong before.

If any of you have seen this one and got something out of it, please explain it to us.  Huh

Sorry for this to be such a bad review, but in our opinion it is a bad one!  Dont' waste your money. We're happy all it cost us was the price of Blockbuster.

Thank you luci for your thoughts!  I was wanting to rent this and could only find it on DVD which I don't have.   I am a good judge (imagine that) of the movies I want and don't want to see.  I generally don't like "artsy fartsy" movies that go over well with the critics.  However, I just feel the need to see the hyped performances in this movie. Same way as I will eventually see Mystic River and House of Sand & Fog.  If you wouldn't  mind though, please send over some toothpicks to keep my eyes open.   lol

p.s. Sophia Coppola makes weird movies.  I think we all saw that with The Virgin Suicides.  I used to be the personal assistant to her father in law. So I just have an interest in seeing her movies.  Once again, send over some toothpicks luci.    Grin

I also didn't like this movie.  Bill Murry was great in Groundhogs Day and other movies like Ghostbusters but not this movie.

I loved this movie & every time I watch this film I want to go to Tokyo!

The script, the staging, the pacing & the acting is all really good. It's the kind of movie that comes across as being unscripted & sort of washed over me when I first saw it. If you liked "The Virgin Suicides" you'd be familliar with what I'm talking about, but I'd imagine it's difficult for everyone in the world to relate to a movie about jet lag & a midlife crisis.

Also, rumor has it that Bill Murray's character is based on Harrison Ford & I'm imagining the character of Charlotte to reflect Sophia, who had reportedly spent a lot of time in the hotel where the characters are staying.

I would go on, but I don't have the time right now. Just wanted to put in a quick good word for it!

The other movie more boring or just as boring to us was, "Evita".  And I love musicals.

We knew the story line, know this is his character.  We can be home and be bored by ourselves, if the situation gets that drab at home, perish the thought!  Why pay to watch a boring movie.  Thankfully our life is plenty colorful that we do not need this for us to be entertained.   The movie only gave us a down feeling!   Not for us!   Show us happy Grin

Ok, drudged this up from page 20 or so.  Smiley

Wife and I just took a MHD (mental health day) yesterday and called in sick to spend the day watching movies together and just relaxing.

We watched this and I have to say at first I was completely lost by it (no pun intended). The more I though about it later the more it began to appeal to me.

I get the whole Jet lag/Mid life crisis thing as the basic plot. I just happened to look a bit deeper at it and that is where is began to hit home.

Maybe it is because my trip to China two years ago was very similar. Jet lag, pseudo mid-life crisis, new friend on the trip.

I think the deeper message can be related back to the CD she was listening to about finding your soulmate. The two main characters talked about it briefly at one point but I think the deeper message in the movie is about the two of them connecting on a deeper level.

When Bob sleeps with the lounge singer Charlotte is hurt. She says the woman is at least closer to his age. He is obviously pained by this and feels like he betrayed Charlotte. I think the sexual tension between them is a big part of the movie.

In the end they part with a kiss. They may never have taken their relationship to the next level but I think the connected on a deeper scale and each helped the other out emotionally.

It is not really one I would own but I enjoyed it.

Oh I love this movie (and in my case, enough to have bought the dvd - and i don't buy movies that often)...

I loved the relationship between Charlotte and Bob, I think you narrowed it well Boradamer... And we don't know how it really ends, we don't know what Bob whispers to Charlotte at the end of the movie. What did he say ? Will they see each other again ? Was their kiss the ending or the beginning ? That's all in the air, and that's the beauty of this film... Subtle, delicate, but intense.

Another line in the movie that stands out is when Charlotte tells him if they ever do come back it could never be the same.

The experiences they each had at that point in life and the individual struggles each was going through (Bob - Mid life crisis, 25 years of marriage, 3 kids I think. Charlotte - 2 years married so newly-wed, young, husband always gone and will popular stars, over educated for his lifestyle, not sure where to go in life) made for a unique experience for each of them.

To me she just wanted to spend time with someone who was more fun to talk to and be with. Bottom line, show her some attention. He on the other hand was bored with his life and was at that point where he felt life was mundane and repetetive. She offered him a fresh outlook on life and the attention of a younger woman made him feel young again.

What he said to her I don't know. I found this great quote on the internet about the ending:

Quote:
The ending is magnificent because it gives itself over entirely to this ambiguity. After an awkward public exchange in a hotel lobby surrounded by fans and agents, Bob runs after Charlotte and whispers something in her ear. We don’t know what he says, but it is something that can only be said in the anonymity and transience of the busy Tokyo street. They smile at each other, tearfully, and separate, consoled. It is less of a plot denouement than a surrender to sheer feeling. We don’t know why or how, but we can see that they feel better, and so do we. It is one of those beautiful and rare moments in cinema when the audience and characters have been led to the same place. Together, we have found a consolation in the mystery.

Ok, watched the ending again before I took the DVD back. At the very end where he whispers to her I could not catch the first part but the last thing he says is, "and tell him that you love him." At that point she smiles and shakes her head yes. They then share a kiss and part, each with a smile that shows all has been healed and each had grown a bit in the process.

Might have to buy this after all.  Grin

I got all you've told about in the movie, but to me it still is
a bit boring.  Yes, there is a message to it in several places!

Scarlett Johansen was on a talk show after the movie came out, and they asked her what Bill Murray whispered to her... she just smiled and told them she'd never tell.. Smiley

I liked it too, not enough to buy it, but I liked it... but then, I also liked Sideways and everyone said I was nuts.. Smiley
