Peter Jackson's 'Hobbit' Plans Delayed
Mon, Mar 08, 2004, 08:03 AM PT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Lord of the Rings" fans will have to wait to return to Middle Earth.
Although director Peter Jackson wants to helm "The Hobbit," the prequel to the Oscar-winning "Rings" trilogy, legal issues are causing a delay. New Line Cinema has rights to make the movie, but MGM has the rights to distribute it, reports the AP.

"I guess MGM's lawyers and New Line's lawyers are going to have a huge amount of fun over the next few years trying to work it all out," says Jackson. "I'm obviously busy for a couple of years on 'King Kong' so those lawyers can just go at it for a long time."

"The Hobbit" centers on Bilbo Baggins, who finds the One Ring and has an uncomfortable, un-hobbitlike adventure across Middle Earth. Through his travels he comes across younger versions of "Rings" characters Gollum and Gandalf the Grey. An older Bilbo, played by Ian Holm, appears briefly in two of the "Rings" films.

Jackson says that he will want to maintain the same feel in "Hobbit" as in his award-winning trilogy.

"I'd want Ian McKellen to be back as Gandalf. I'd want it to feel like it was part of the same mythology that we've done with 'Lord of the Rings,'" Jackson says.

Jackson is currently filming the remake of "King Kong" starring Naomi Watts. The final installment of the series, "The Return of the King," won 11 Oscars, including best picture and best director.

I'm just happy he's going to do the film at all, regardless of how far away it is.  If it's a few years from now, my children might even get to enjoy it too.  Smiley    Initially he had said there was no way he was going to do a Hobbit film, so I am thrilled just to hear that he will be at all.

YUP... it would be very nice that Jackson would be doing the Hobbit... that definitely make the film connected to the Rings...

its quite off if it would be directed by a different person... the look and feel would definitely not be the same as the trilogy... just like other movies with sequels that changed directors (Jurassic Park, Interview with the Vampire/Queen of the Damnedm etc..)

The movie will be awesome if Jackson holds to his intentions of using the same actors (McKellen, the guy who played Gollum (Andy Serkis), etc)

Unfortunately, the King Kong in which Jessica Lange starred left me unable to see her as a serious actress after that.  I know she won an Oscar years later, but I still could see her ditzy King Kong character in my mind.  Roll Eyes

'Fraid you're right about Jessica Lange, Rupe!  I don't think she's done too much since KK in 1976.   However, I'll be happy to see another King Kong.  The first KK movie came out in 1933 - at least I've found SOMETHING that happened before I was born.  :laff:

Actually this topic is about Peter Jackson and what he's working on, etc.  Seeing as King Kong as his next project was mentioned in the original article, King Kong discussion is totally relevant.

It's about whatever's relevant.  You have to learn to be flexible Wink  sometimes we go off on side tangents in threads.  There are some forums that insist on people staying strictly on topic, but we are not one of them...we like to meander...

King Kong? The last one was a remake right? He should have made a remake to the classic Godzilla vs. King Kong. Now that would ROCK!
