"Troy" review

I saw the movie yesterday, and all I can say is that the movie is very good. Not THAT great, but very good.

Acting is very decent, and the story is very very engaging, even though most of us know how its gonna end anyway. You can see different egos and personalities trying to fit in in the world(much like "Survivor").

The fight scenes was quite good too. Reminds me of the opening battle at "Saving Private Ryan". Quite bloody at some parts(and I bet a good part of it was cut!), and there are no silly moves that you see in some classic themed movies (Beowulf!). The battle of Hector and Achilles is beautifully done and you can see why *ahem* is considered one of the best fighter despite the other one's renowned skill too.

I am glad too that there isnt much CGIs here that kinda destroys the mood of a movie much like "Van Helsing"(which is quite good I might add). "Troy" is done in a traditional way, with a sprinkle of movie magic here and there...

The only "setback" I saw was the city of Troy itself, in which you dont get to see much of it except for bird's eye view. The area seems to be focused on a very small part, which I presume was just done in a small set.

And as of the characters, the main character - Achilles, I got different emotions and reactions for him throughout the movie... cuz he seem pretty cocky but at the same time, he got a sense of righteousness... and at the last part, you actually pity him...

The real hero for me is Hector... so into ideals; youre ideal hero I might say. You will love him in the whole part he played, he is the compassionate, reasonable, lawfull good type that cares for all.. And Bana here really looks like Burton from Survivor Pearl Islands!

All in all, I give it an 8.5 - 9 out of 10 stars. Its 3 hours long, and as I said, most of us knows the story, but even with those, you will find yourself truly emerged in the story, especially since we can really feel feelings for different characters, which is rare in a good movie these days.

yeah... i agree.. this is very good film.... very well done... and Bana played best among the characters... Grin  I liked their stunts and how they have put emotions to some of the characters specially Priam's request for Hector's corpse and also the scene when Hector killed Menelaus to save his brother Paris....

well.. if you saw the credits... it says that it was mostly filmed in a film studio with a few on site shots in Malta and Mexico....

some of my officemates who saw this said that it seems like a lady flick.. where Brad Pitt showed alot of his butt... hehehe.... a guy officemate even commented that he felt gay seeing Pitt's butt.. hehehe...

overall... its a nice film with or without Pitt's butt.... nice battle scenes and stunt by Pitt... also.. this story still opens that enemies can still be lovers... Grin (poetic isn't it) Grin

There was a TV movie called "Helen of Troy" that came out...hmmm...was it last year?  I know that "Troy" is bound to be much better but if anyone remembers that TV movie and has seen "Troy" I'm wondering how the story lines compare.

Gladiator is a far better movie.  I fell asleep in Troy for about a half hour.  I was bored.  The movie was a little too drawn out.

Troy got more interesting characters obviously, and you can relate to one or more of them... You will feel different emotions to each of them... Gladiator got a unique story(moreso cuz its a new story I guess), but characters are mostly based on Maximus and the Emperor, others are just 2 dimensional, maybe except Proximo...

I like Gladiator better, but Troy is not far behind...

I read these post yesterday and decided to go see Troy last night with a buddy of mine. We both left the theater feeling jipped. I was not impressed too much with the movie, especially the fact that they talked in english but used an aweful lot of greek terms felt like you were listening to two languages.

I wasnt big on the special effects either thought that for 175 million they couldve done a better job on the cgi for Achilles first opponent (the 7 foot something guy with the cg torso)

One funny part is when the greek army is all lined up after winning a night battle, all the soldiers have thier arms raised and are yelling the battle cry...... if you watch the guy in the front near the left side, you will see him turn to the camera smile and let out a big Rupert Roar then look beside him at his buddy, laugh and then turn back to the direction everyone else is and continue cheering, ....... you know he will get a kick out of not ending up on the editing room floor.

what couldve made this movie better? either get some better lines for the actors (poor peter o toole) or cut about an hour out of the movie (cheesy love scenes for sure) that wouldve been better,

cheers
