Just rented it over the weekend. I have to say I loved the film. The acting was superb, the visuals were outstanding, the plot was a tear jerker.

This is one I will have to own for my collection.

I watched this movie a month ago and I thought (was told) that I wouldnt like it. That being said I will say that I think it was Tom's best movie since Rainman.

I love samuri films. Ones like this that really explore giri (duty & honor) especially. I have several books on the subject and the samuri always had to maintain that fine balance. They had their duty to the emperor and their person code of honor. In ancient days it was not hard to maintain both but as times changed it became harder for them to walk the line.

"The Last Samuri" shows this in fine detail. The populace held the samuri in high regard but they all had a duty to the emperor. They felt bad for the samuri as technology pushed them aside but there was little they could do. It was a hard path to follow but the ones that did were revered for their honor to the code and themselves.

I liked this film too... good plot....  the Japanese has a very high regard on Honor.... I hope more would do the same... except of course doing harakiri or the suicide...

It is hard for most western nations to understand Sepuku (spelling?). In the early scene after the first battle where the elder samuri was commiting sepuku they did a good job with Tom's character calling it a murder.

In their society if you lost a battle you dishonored your leige. This meant you lost your honor. To gain it back you had to commit sepuku. You started the initial thrust in your abdomen. The second person was there to decapitate you before you could dishonor yourself by soiling yourself when your bowels gave out. The person chosen to decapitate you was in a position of high honor and a lot was expected of them. They were to decapitate you in one clean blow to preserve your honor. If they did not it was bad for them and you.

It is a very complex culture but at the root honor was held in the highest regard.

Yeah definitely a GREAT movie! I got the DVD, and I think anyone who really liked it should get it as a collection...

Touching with great action!

I just dont like the Emperor though, he lacks what you call a backbone! Though thanks to the story's end, it makes you think that he is the reason for the attack on PH.
